KKTV and KOAA tied at 10 p.m.

The May Nielsen book is out and it's all tied up at 10 o'clock, with KKTV/Channel 11 and KOAA/Channels 5&30 even up in both rating and share. The two stations have been close at 10 for a long time, but this is the first real book since KKTV brought in Shannon Brinias, Don Ward and Brian Bledsoe to replace Eric Singer, Melissa Brown and Mike Madson (February's book didn't really count because of the Olympics).

So I'm wondering, all those hundreds of people who called me and said they'd never, ever watch KKTV again because of the change.... what happened to you?

Either a bunch of those people decided Don and Shannon weren't the end of the world after all, or a bunch of other people switched from the other stations to replace them, or, by some quirk of fate, no one who was pissed off about the change got a Nielsen diary in May. I'm looking at option numero uno: One book does not a trend make, but given that this fits into the pattern of the last several books, I don't expect KK's ratings to fall off a cliff anytime soon.

The fun part will be the next couple of sweeps periods. I expect to see both stations come out swinging.

I have to say that Don Ward, Shannon Brinias, and Brian Bledsoe have proven to be great replacements for Eric Singer, Melissa Brown, and Mike Madson. Granted the old crew will have to get real jobs even though Madson has found some work at KOAA.

Ward, Brinias, and Bledsose are all from Colorado and are happy to be able to work in Colorado once again. KKTV made the right choices regarding a new crew.

Unless KKTV does another Extreme Makeover in 20 years or so, these people are going to be on KKTV for years to come.

I also wanted to add that what KKTV does the viewer a favor in their 10PM newscast. You get the Top Stories and the complete weather report before the first commerical break.

The other stations make you wait around the 15 minute mark plus two commerical breaks to get a complete weather report. Don't be suprised if KRDO and KOAA copy more/less what KKTV is doing.

KKTV, makes the weather seem to be the end of the world! They break in every 5 min. I watch CBS programming for the SHOWS... not the Weather. If my life is threatened... Break in, I want to know... if not... I have a window and I will look out of it.

No doubt KKTV has made some major improvements in the last 6 months, but I have to echo the sentiments of the poster who think Bledsoe over-hypes weather. Have you ever heard of the weather man who cried wolf?

Obviously the ratings are up, so it's not going to change... but the sensationalism does get annoying sometimes.

A tip of the old topper to the reporters and all of the production staff too! Without the news stories, the anchors would have nothing to report.....so how about a good job all around!!!!!

It was the KKTV Katherine Cook fan club that put them over the top. We are 5000 strong!

To me, KKTV's campaign of "all the news/weather in the first 11 mintues" says "go ahead and change the channel after 11 minutes - we have nothing else to offer". I'd rather watch KOAA because I know their WHOLE newscast will be informative.

Not to mention the fact that you usually have to wait for no wait weather and with a weather hit right in the middle of the A block, it's not really *non stop*
news.

You make a good point, and personally I like what KKTV does since I like to listen to some talk radio at night, and I don't have to watch 20 minutes just to get my weather.

The 11 Minutes inhancer on KKTV can be a blessing but it can be its curse. However it seems that their are people that don't want to sit around just to get a full weather forecast and KKTV fills that need.

I fear, Don M., you have succumb to a promotions/marketing gimmick.

You have let the media massage your mind.

Top stories and weather in the first 11 minutes of the show. That's what happens in almost all late night local newscasts across the country.
KOAA does it.
They have weather in the first segment, with your forecast, and they don't waste 5 minutes on it in the first segment like KKTV.

Frankly, most people only want to know what they should plan to wear the next day. They don't want to sit through 5 minutes of BS, especially at the top of the newscast.

Their is a little truth to the marketing. Everyone in media has to have a promotions/marketing gimmick. How about fewer commericals??? Their might be such but you have 3 breaks instead of two.

Granted I did not like the way Mike Madson produce the No-Wait Weather segement when this thing got started, but Brian Bledsoe knows how to do it.

"That's what happens in almost all late night local newscasts across the country. KOAA does it."

So your a die hard KOAA viewer. I like KOAA too but I watch them in the morning. Well I would but lately I have been sleeping during the morning newscast. I hardley can catch KKTV at 10PM because of my job.

KOAA and KKTV have the best newscasts in the market hands down. I am more into talk radio myself.

All I said is that I like what KKTV does regarding the Weather Forecast done completly rather than just a tease of sorts unless your in a weather emergency and that goes to the top of the agenda, but still a forcast you have to wait for.

I am sure KKTV is not the first station in America to do something like "No Wait Weather."

All the stations have to have something to market themselves with. As for as weather here is a rundown.

KRDO=Those who the seals in spite of lacking a Real Time Doppler program.

KOAA=Real Time Tempatures and Wind Gust via Weatherbug

KKTV=No need to watch 20 minutes of news just to get your complete weather forecast.

Granted it could work againist KKTV if they want to have people watch the commericals, but for someone who wants to go to bed around 11 after 10 it will work for them.

Let us not agure over this. I like what KKTV does at 10PM and I like the daily crew. Lets end it here.

Because of the shift I'm working right now, I don't really get to watch late news... but back when I wasn't living such back asswords life, for my money, I really liked the 9:00 news on KXRM. Certainly there is nothing special about the current incarnation of FOX 21 News, but I did love having the option to watch the news at 9:00. I can't wait to see what Joe Cole and Barrington come up with on October 2, I can only assume KXRM's news product will improve 10 fold when it's no longer the wicked step child of some other station in the market that has to deal with it, but doesn't really want to.

Something about KOAA has alway's grated my nerves... I can't put my finger on it though.

KKTV produced a great newscast for KXRM when it started in 2001. However when they were planning to discontinue the newspartership with KXRM the results on the screen showed. It is not as good now as it was then. Neverless KKTV and KXRM have to hang tough until the commitment is over. KKTV moving forward with its newscast (which is better than the one they produce for KXRM), and KXRM in which they want to equal or better KKTV and KRDO and KOAA.

I am sure KXRM will be back with a vengency in October. If not right away, at least have a great start.

Also looks like KRDO-TV has a second place finish in the mornings. NPG will sure work on evenings when they take over next week. KKTV should look into replacing Kim Price and Jeff Marcu cause they are dragging that station down in morning drive.

You ever wonder how you could have "News First" and "Weather First"... Logic might say that 1 or the other has to be really "first"...

Yeah she looks alright, but just don't talk to her. It'll ruin your perception of her.

Their stories suck. Their reporters look and sound like they're in high school. The production crew? Who cares.
