Tony D boxed out from the Sports Animal

Although I'm not a sports radio guy myself, I'm still sad to hear Tony D was dropped from KKML (1300 AM) "The Sports Animal" on Monday for budget reasons.

So now Colorado Springs, a city of half a million people, is completely without a local sports radio show. Sure, there's sports on the radio, local, regional and national, but there's not a place to talk about it anymore.

That just seems wrong to me.

Anyway, I always thought Tony D did a nice job jumping from local to national issues and keeping the show moving right along. I hope he finds a soft landing somewhere.

Problem is a very large segment of that half million people cared very little about sports in this town. Tony D did a good job thou with the resources he had available.

And yet another bit of evidence that Citadel is soon to fold. Another terrible move. They continually make "business decisions" that do nothing but alienate listeners and move them even further from loyalty. Meanwhile, I renew my interest in satellite radio...

This is absolutely crazy. His show is the best local talk show in this town by lengths. Citadel will be receiving a letter from me and I encourage all of you to do the same. I will now listen to Denver sports radio.

Tony D was an asset to local broadcasting. Hopefully, he'll be back on the air very soon. Hopefully, it'll be here in Colorado Springs (or Denver, for the sake of his career).

Thanks for all the comments about my dismal. I really appreciate everyone over the last four years. Citadel made a business decison and I have no hard feelings.

As for being on the air locally, I would love to stay in the Springs. I would love to be in Denver. It looks like I have to leave the state and that makes me sad.

Again, the four years were a blast. We had some fun and I loved it all the time.

I should have said dismissal. Dismal is a little harsh!

Unbelievable.

Whether or not a "very large segment of that half million" (a statement I believe to be totally false by the way) care very little for sports is irrelevant.

I'm a transplant, and in this "small" town you have the Rockies Triple A team (where nearly all the Big Show players this year seem to be playing while on the way back from injury), the revitalized AF Academy (football team anyway), some stellar college hockey teams, and the United Friggin States Olympic training center -- IN AN OLYMPIC YEAR! We have the Senior Open going on at the Broadmoor in a few months... and NO local sports talk radio to cover any of this!? WTH?!

And a mere sixty miles north you have a professional athletic team in all four major sports (one of which went to the World Series last year!), not to mention all the colleges.

There are more sports going on in this state per capita then most other places in the whole of the USA. People would KILL for this kind of sports country!

The "small town" mentality here is the problem. It's time someone in this town stepped up to the plate and played with the big dogs. Otherwise we'll always be relegated to being water boys.

It's pathetic to be honest.

To Tony D... sorry you're leaving man. You got robbed.

First the they brodcast the crappy rockies games and now they take the best show off the air what a joke the citadel brodcasting group is. I hope tony finds a better gig somewhere else.

Another local sport show bites the dust. They just don't understand, do they. Good luck, Tony.

I can only say that Citadel made the biggest mistake of their lives. Now do they not have a show, they are having to give back thousands of dollars because advertisers are closing business with Citadel all together. Sales peeple are quiting and going to other places, they are not stupid, they can read the writing on the wall. If you want budget cuts, take from the top..Management as idiotic as they are(Mike Knarr and Bobby Irwin to name a couple) should not have a job at all. Good luck Tony and I wish you all the best. It was great working with you!

The number 1300, as it pertains to AM radio, is dead to me. I took 1300 off of my preset radio stations in my car, and replaced it with 1490, "Radio Que Bueno". The sad part is that I hate Mexican music, and I don't speak Spanish. I figured that I will listen to 1490 way more than ESPN radio, now that Tony D is gone. The 1300 button had just become a waste of a perfectly good electronic energy in my radio. At least now I can put on 1490 on my way to Monica's to get in the mood for that chorizo & egg burrito I enjoy so much!

I thought maybe Tony was just on vacation. Now on Monday morning I turn on 1300 and get AM country? Who listens to AM music, are they in the 60's? I hate to see Tony go but now we have no local access to sports talk at all. The sports stations in Denver have never had a strong enough signal to reach here and I'm not in my vehicle or have access while at work to any other means. This sucks. KKML started blowing it when they went from fox to ESPN, but now nothing! Tony hope you land somewhere. My sports life is in a crisis this morning. Just goes to show the only thing not changing is that everything is changing.

Great Move. Sports talk is lousy stuff day in and day out. Another move by Citadel that hurts KCCY. First Cat Country and now this.

At 12:01 PM, June 30, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Are you crazy? Country music, or any music on AM is gargabe. This does not hurt KCCY at all and nor will it.

There is most certainly a market for sports radio. And while you think it is "lousy", some of us prefer it to hearing Merel Haggard 30 times a day.

The 1300 web site redirects to Country Music.

Every major market (and some not so major) have a sports radio program.

The trend in radio is niche radio, sports, talk, Dr. Laura, etc.

In Charlotte NC, (where I mved from) sport radio has gone to almost all local shows.

Mark Packer with Primetime, on the 3-7 shift is now on about 10 radio stations across the SouthEast. He even has football tour called "The Fried Chicken tour.

Sorry to hear this... even though I never called in, this was my drive home listening pleasure. Tony did a great job and I always enjoyed what he had to say.
I guess the money talks, but I have a hard thinking they are gonna pull more listeners with classic country over Mike & Mike, Romie and Tony D. It seemed Tony was always doing remotes.
I really feel sorry for Rynestone and Miss Canada; they were just getting their careers on the road!
Best of lucky Tony! Show Citadel the mistake they made!

I'm going to guess that quite a few cubical warriors like me in Colorado Springs felt like they got kicked in the junk all day long.

The radio in the Springs, in general, is terrible, and listening to Cowherd, Rome, and Tony D expressing original thought was the only thing that kept my head from exploding when I rolled through the dial.

Citadel has lost one listener, as I will not tollerate listening to any of their other crappy stations, and thus, their crappy ads. I will miss Rome a lot, but good riddance Springs radio: Sirius, here I come.

Great comments. This is definitely a shock, but local sports-talk fans should think of it as a brief off-season. There's an old saying that "nature abhors a vacuum." Well, so does marketing. From sports bars to the Sky Sox to women's roller-derby at the World Arena, Colorado Springs has too many businesses relying on the sports-talk radio format and its male ad demographic for their livelihood. So don't worry. For those of us who'd rather hear about Alabama's starting quarterback than Alabama's lead singer, it's just a matter of time. There are plenty of settings on the AM dial. And somewhere out there I can hear opportunistic suits scrambling to fill this void. The sad thing is that (unless they hurry up) it could be without Tony D, who will be sorely missed. Blessings, Tony. I'll miss having you ride shotgun on the commute home.

I can't believe this. I just got back into town and thought someone messed with my radio settings. Country? I've listened to Tony D. since his start here. Somebody better step up before he's gone. I remember when Rome was gone for an eternity here. It sucked. Gotta go my fries are up, jerk

At 8:52 PM, July 01, 2008, Anonymous Anonymous said...

WOW! I thought something was up too. Turned on 1300 this morning and it was classic country. What a joke!

One month a go I could get 3 sports stations. AM 1350 from Pueblo (they went to OLD oldies) Am 950 "the fan" Denver (they went to FM and I can no longer get the signal). Now 1300 goes off too. I've heard that 1350 in Pueblo was connected to Citadel also. Why are they abandoning sports radio?

I'm going to have Rome withdraws real soon.

Also I'm missing Tony on my way home.

Tony D was a complete hack. He may not have been a bad person but man he knew nothing about sports, wasn't funny, and wasn't smart. Two sequences that outraged me:
1. He and Kip the idiot lamented the fact that the Nuggets hadn't signed Gilbert Arenas several years ago. Arenas is the same sort of me-first, more hassle than he's worth "star" as our entire roster is composed of these days. What a solution! I wanted Ginobili...
2. He and Kip couldn't think of the name Monta Ellis! I realize he's not an everyday name, but if your JOB is to know about sports, you shouldn't have to look up the name of a budding star.

I used to turn my radio off completely between 3 and 6 because I'd get so upset I thought I might run into something. I don't wish Tony or Kip harm, but good riddance.

Sounds like you heard a lot of stuff you didnt like for someone who hated his show so much....

You may have hated Tony D...but guess what...you were listening.

Kinda the point isnt it?

Good Luck Tony D...Loved the show and I know you are going to go far.

Either way this sucks....

I loved having a local espn radio show. It was the only local radio station worth listening to. Now I will have to pursue sat radio.

BTW...who in their right mind listens to classical country? How is this genre going to rake in more money than ESPN radio? I mean country music is bad enough, but classical country??? YUK!!!!!

When you turn on the am dial you get enough politics and Jesus to last a lifetime. The only escape was to turn to 1300am , now all I get is a little old school country music with my politics and Jesus. I can't believe Colo Spgs. Where did sports radio go in this town? I can't afford satellite radio. So as I go through the am dial I can't even get the Denver stations. Looks like I better look into satellite.
