The Eagle has landed

Classic rock station KYZX (103.9 FM) re-launched itself this morning as KRXP "Colorado's Rock Experience."

Program director Jason Janc said the new format would incorporate more current music and bring in younger listeners.

"Classic rock is always evolving," he said.

Expect to hear artists like Sheryl Crow, Matchbox 20, Maroon 5 and Live on the reformatted KRXP, Janc said, along with the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith the station was already playing. Although there's some crossover with stations like adult contemporary KVUU (99.9 FM), Janc said no one in Colorado Springs has the same format.

"We're trying to do something new," he said. "You'll get the rock hits: It should be one familiar song after another."

KYZX typically trailed classic rock rival KKFM (98.1 FM) in the Arbitron ratings. The format switch may mean that the station will compete more with KVUU, KKPK (92.9 FM) and KDZA (107.9 FM) than KKFM.

They're juggling the DJ lineup, but not breaking out the axe - Jason and Aaron in the mornings, Appleby middays, Beau on nights.

I turned them on this morning and heard 3 KILO songs in a row and thought, wow, whats up? I hope they do like the phoenix stations do, one a metal new rock station, the other a hard rock with a moniker, EVERYTHING THAT ROCKS kind of format. I am refering to KUPD, alot like KILO, and KDKB, which is alot like the new 1039RXP. They do complement each other well and are killing the phoenix market with the younger 18 to 35 market.

I just found a rock station in new york that has the same call letters and claims to be the new your rock experience. how can this be? doesn't the fcc have guidelines to follow here? andy please look into this. it is very much like our new 1039rxp. http://www.1019rxp.com/

here's the news link I found about krxp in new york. very strange how a K station can be in new york when W stations are supposed to be east of the Mississippi... check it out andy... http://www.theday.com/re.aspx?re=d0d038bb-1e77-4f33-b754-bf456bc7cf3d

soneone forgot RADIO 101...east of the missisippi calls begin with W (with a few grandfathered exceptions) west , calls begin with K...so you could easily have WRXP and KRXP..the WRXP(NY rock experience) is vastly different..with an emphasis on NY based rock ..a good start..now lets get some content to go along with it!

The author of the linked article got the New York call letters wrong.
We've got our "Rock Experience" on KXRP, while New York has their "Rock Experience" on WXRP.

okay now that is all settled..i still think krxp (formerly the eagle) needs to do something with that morning show..no offense to jason and the other guy..but talk about no spark...whew! can't someone put together a LOCAL morning show to compete with BOOB and Tom? just shuffling around announcers isn't the answer...

it would be nice if they would do something local, but i believe its going to be hard to find good talent out there that is not happy with their current gig. i have found in other cities with bob and tom on one station, the counter is john boy and billy. may not be a bad idea to start out with then go local later when a big team comes our way. hey, did you notice dirk kirkland is back in town? kkfm? wow... he was super cool on kilo i thought then he lft for denver i think. now he's back. welcome back dirk!

john boy and billy are funny but work better on country i think..and really? do we need yet ANOTHER syndicated show in this town? i know radio is looking for any way to save money but come on already! that is cool that Dirk is back..i also heard Mark Stevens on KKFM at the ZZ Top show..hmmm maybe those two could team up for a show? anything but more "piped in" talent! come on colorado springs managers think outside the box here!!!!

country, i dont think so,,,i haven;t heard john boy and billy on any country stations. one classic rocker that comes to mind is in mississippi. www.z106.com maybe its a southern rock thing. i think on a temporary basis to get the ball rolling it would do great to have another syndicated radio show here. I would also like krxp pick up the monsters of rock radio network program on the weekends.

Okay, I stand corrected...checked john boy and billy's website and there are a lot of classic rock stations. I guess my concern was that almost all the states their show is in..are below the mason-dixon line...and we really, really DO NOT need another syndicated show here. Over the years, there have been some really good , fun LOCAL morning shows. Why does it seem so hard to find that for the classic rock stations now? Is it just money related? well at least KRxp is trying to move a bit past the stale 300 song library of most classic rock stations!

Is there any chance the new RXP can get HD installed? I would like to see both KILO and RXP and even KRDO get modern with the new technology with 2 or 3 sub channels and song tags and the whole 9 yards like weather, traffic info. I see KKFM, PEAK has the song tags but my HD radio will not pick them up as a HD stations like it does the others ie KKLI, MAGIC, BEAT, KCCY, KRCC, JET etc.
