KRDO wins three regional Emmys

KRDO/Channel 13 won three regional Emmy awards from the Heartland Region of the National Television Academy.

KRDO won for its morning newscast, Rob Namnoum won best sports anchor and the station won the community service award for its series on sex offenders.

The awards were presented Saturday in Denver.

Others entered, just didn't win.

Vida Urbonas won three awards also for her work at KWGN-TV before coming to KRDO to anchor the weekend morning news...Just to clarify did other Springs/Pueblo stations enter along with the entries from other Heartland states?

I don't think all the stations entreated, I think having the Emmy's on set for the news casts is a little tasteless.

Funny. I hear KOAA didn't enter AP's or Emmy's and those are the only contests KRDO won. Why didnt KOAA enter? Are they trying to give 13 a chance?

At 8:40 AM, July 21, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So, when channel 13 says they won 6 awards, 3 of them were won by Vida at a different station? It doesn't seem right for 13 to take credit for work at KWGN-TV.

I just have a problem with the emmy displayed stage left on that red velvet-ie cloth. It looks really tacky. ...But hey, we're watching...

Make sure to watch KOAA tomorrow, I hear they are going to display all the station of the year awards on set. You'll need a crane shot to see george and Adam.
I guess that separates the channel 5 from krdo.
Know your good and let the product speak for itself, or as Andy said flaunt it.

I'll dip a toe back in here: I'm willing to give KRDO slack on this stuff because they're on the upswing. If in a few years, they're the top station and they win all the awards and they're still behaving like the nouveau riche? Then it will be tacky. But celebrating their newfound success seems entirely understandable.

Andy, I disagree. Act like you been there before, that this is not your first BBQ

Chill dude. Maybe they wanted to get under your skin, which they did. I'm not even in tv and I think it's kind of funny. Also I watched this morning and I didn't see anything on set out of the normal. Where are they?

At 7:04 AM, July 23, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Chill?

Let's see, KRDO LIES about the number of awards they won and you want the guy(or gal) to chill? I thought deceiving people was a huge sin for journalists.

LYING to all us of should get under our skin KRDO!

Andy...giving them kudos for their three awards is cool, but not calling them out for taking credit for Vida's KWGN awards seems to be selective analysis.

Deception in the news business is dangerous for everyone.

They removed the Emmys from the set on Wednesday I believe. Instead, they have a bumper before each newscast that says "You're watching Southern Colorado's Only Emmy Award Winning Newscast." ...There is also something to be said for KRDO acknowledging Vida as a member of their team considering two of the three awards she won were just with herself (narrator and writer) and not a part of a larger ensemble at KWGN. A pat on the back in essence saying "We're glad to have you (a talented emmy-awarding winning journalist) a part of our team now and your accomplishment is still great--even if it wasn't with us we're glad to have you now.

Chill, everyone. Obviously they are getting under your skin. Also, they didn't lie because I bet they sent Andy an email letting them know about the Emmy Awards. If they did, then Andy would know if they were taking credit or not. But saying they are deceptive is something I don't think they are. From where I sit, it appears it's sour grapes and the same person is getting upset. But your face must be turning red by the way you are getting worked up over it. It's not that big of a deal as you are making it. You tv people are hilarious.

At 9:47 PM, July 23, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The bumper is also a LIE. KOAA won an Emmy for best newscast and overall excellence a few years back, the one time they did enter. I also believe KKTV won a newscast emmy years ago. You didn't see them bragging about it like KRDO. I think KOAA and KKTV should call them out.

Also, as far as anonymous above claiming KRDO is not being deceptive, where are your facts?

There's plenty of evidence laid out in this thread alone, proving they are lying. And if we detest deception and express it, that is not sour grapes.

I have been in the market for 30 years. Believe me, when a station wins an Emmy or Station of the Year award, they promote the heck out of it. As did KKTV and KOAA when they won there awards previously.

I give any station their due.

Here is the original headline from KRDO's web site...

Newschannel 13 Emmy Winners. Posted: Updated: COLORADO SPRINGS - NEWSCHANNEL 13 has won 6 Emmy at this year's Regional Emmy

Again, how is that NOT deceptive?

Andy? Bueller? Sipes? Anyone want to defend this?

At 6:06 PM, July 24, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

i don't like KRDO because the anchors don't even say thank you to the field reporters when they are on air....so they should not deserve an emmy. KKTV is finally getting their act together after the dismissal of Eric Singer/Melissa Brown/Mike Madson saga. KOAA finally got a hispanic reporter. I give thumbs down to KRDO until they say thank you.

At 9:31 PM, July 24, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

One, I think those people you want to defend have a life and it doesn't include posting on message boards.
Two, did you think they pulled it down because it was wrong? I know the other stations make mistakes. Like the time KOAA showed a bank and said it was closed by the government and handed over to another bank. Oops wrong bank. Everyone makes mistakes.
Three, KOAA didn't win overall excellence in the emmy's. There isn't a category. Maybe station excellence, and they didn't win that either, ever.
Finally, get a life and stop getting your panties, yes panties, in a wad.
So instead of accusing everyone of lies, take back your lies as well, like that overall excellence, or was it a mistake?

WOW! So someone posting a mistake on this thread means it's okay for KRDO to BROADCAST A LIE REPEATEDLY?!

And as far as Andy calling KRDO out for lying, that's a joke. He's already said this isn't his main job now. KRDO obviously took that to mean they can pull out all the stops on unethical behavior because no one will call them on it.

KOAA did win Emmy's for newscast and Station Excellence.

Whoever said they didn't doesn't know what the heck he/she's talking about and is obviously a liar. Which is most likely why he/she doesn't think 13's lies are bad.

I like the fact that the Good Morning Colorado won a Emmy, I also like the fact that the only newscast for KRDO to win, may be departing. Rumor on the street is there is going to be a anchor change for the Emmy Award winning Good Morning Colorado! I can't wait to see that Promo!

At 9:38 PM, July 30, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If that's the only show on KRDO to win, why do say Emmy winning newscast on every show?

NEW KRDO PROMO, Always tracking yadda yadda yadda, this one about the High Speed Chase up to Castle Rock, with NO video of the guy getting arrested, or the 2 people injured. Promote shit you aint got! Nice.

I know it seems like sour grapes, but there are a lot of people who believe KRDO is the epitome of bad, deceitful, sensationalized TV. I understand a pat on the back for awards, but so much of what they report is just wrong, and they think the viewer is too dumb to realize it. They take credit for other stations' work, making it seem as if they broke every story, which is usually not true. They promote themselves as the new #1, when that is also not true.
It is really sad that they are actually getting attention for this, because many of us have worked too hard to have someone else make us all look bad.

I have a feeling I'm one of the few people not in the TV Business that read these comments and I have to say that it sounds to me like KOAA people are just freaking out that another station is on the rise. Stop spending so much time griping about other stations and get to work. It's not going to get you anywhere!

At 8:27 PM, August 03, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Once again some is clueless or trying to blurr the issue. Read the previous posts. From what I hear KOAA could give a crap because they have far more people watching than any other station. KKTV is the one in jeopardy! But that doesn't matter. Honesty matters and 13 is not honest. What about that don't you get?

At 9:33 PM, August 03, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I did read the previous posts...Sounds to me like it was a gray area whether or not they had 3 or 6 Emmy's....but like Andy said...you've got them, flaunt them...she may not have won them with work she did at KRDO, but she won them when she was an employee at KRDO. Of course any TV station or Business for that matter will turn a gray area in their favor!!!! Duhhhhhhh....that's just business. Why is that such a big deal.

Great answer, now it's time to grow up and move on. If you are such a KOAA backer, why are they copying everything the competition does then? Why are they not doing their thing that made them successful? Why are they advertising for a producer that "eats and bleeds breaking news"? A year ago, they wouldn't advertise for a producer like that.

Anon said:

"If you are such a KOAA backer, why are they copying everything the competition does then?"

Answer:

Because KOAA's News Director lacks any leadership or direction.

They're new Executive Producer is so clueless that she has become a joke in their own newsroom.

They're General Manager is doing nothing about it and will do nothing until the money train is affected. Sad thing is he doesn't have the vision to see that it'll be too late to turn it around by the time that happens.

The only thing that keeps KOAA looking respectable is a few employees who pick up the management slack. But rumor is they are getting sick of it and couple of big names may jump ship when contracts are up.

At 8:08 AM, August 04, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'd have to agree...whether you hate what KRDO is doing or not, you have to admit that KOAA has jumped right in line behind them and now copies them! Everything from moving the anchors off of the desk during a show more often or all of the music and annimations before stories or even creating new places for reporters to go live in the station.

Just like someone previously posted, KOAA would never have run a commercial about a producer who bleeds for breaking news a year ago...but they apparently thought KRDO's breaking news commercials were getting them somewhere.

KOAA isn't doing anything wrong or strange in my mind...it's business...and you see it everyday in any business environment. I think people forget that TV News is just a business at the end of the day.

I just love how the KOAA backers get on here and bash everything KRDO is doing, but from an outsider I can say it's very obvious they are getting worried about the ratings, because they are doing the same thing.

And yes, KRDO may do a lot of self-promoting...but have you noticed that KOAA.com is now posting viewer e-mails that say what a great station they are????

Hmmmmmmmmm......

At 8:12 AM, August 04, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The main point here is being missed.

KRDO is running snippits before each newscast sayimg Southern Colorado's onle Emmy Award winning newscast.

THAT IS A LIE.

Who cares who's copying who. One thing KOAA and KKTV are NOT doing is they are not lying.

KRDO IS LYING.

Why don't you losers address that issue!?

At 8:15 AM, August 04, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh and by the way, whoever's on here claiming not to be in the media biz, you're full of bs. Everyone who's followed this blog for years knows that true viewers put their names down because they have nothing to lose. The media employees don't because they could be fired for talking about crap happening inside their places of businesses.

At 8:42 AM, August 04, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I used to be in the TV business before I moved here, but I don't work for any of the stations in this market. I don't have a username because I'm too lazy to create one and this is the first time I have ever posted anything on this blog.

Again, KRDO is riding anouther gray area with the Emmy promo before the show and they are turning it in their favor...Have the other stations won Emmy's in the past? Yes. Did any other stations win Emmy's this year? No. It could go either way, but they are turning it in their favor just like anyone else would do.

IS YOUR ISSUE ADDRESSED NOW??????

At 10:13 AM, August 04, 2009, Anonymous URAN IDIOT said...

Also, address the real question. It's not a gray area. It's LYINg!

And it's already been said KRDO only wins awards when KOAA doesn't enter and KOAA did not enter this year. Nor did KOAA enter AP's. Go look at the heartland emmy entry pages.

Also, I work at KKTV and I know we are slipping. I only bring up KOAA because they do win and it's fun watching you fools try to attack them! So bring it on! KKTV will never get back on track with our inexperienced ND and we know it and we deal with it!

At 3:55 PM, August 04, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is all very funny. reminds me of the newsblab days. I like that KK is saying that they know the ND is basically holding them back, but you all have been saying the same about KOAA ND, but now the EP gets brought up, are they that bad? Why?

Actually, Where the News Comes First is an older slogan than News First. Where the News Comes First was started by the Kelly Brothers at KCRA in the late 1967. The Sacremento station built a foundation on it that still survives. Kelly Brothers then let other stations in the country license it for 500 dollars a year. There have been many versions of it over the years including, Where coverage comes First, Where the News is First, and even News First is a spin off. Kelly Brothers use to go after stations who tried to take a variation of it, and have them pay license fees because a consulting company in the late 1980's was having everyone use it. But then the Kelly's just stopped pursing the legal action, because as we all know, they got out of the business. They still own the license fees though as they didn't relenquish that when they sold KRCA to Hearst in the late 1990s.

So if you want to get technical, Where the News Comes First has been around longer as really there is nothing original. Not even KOAA is original as they tried to be a small market version of KUSA. (At least that's been my view of them for the past 15 years that I have lived in the Springs.)

Have a nice day,
Lisa H.

At 11:30 AM, August 06, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

You're right, not much is original these days.

Regarding this market, and specifically this thread of comments, I believe KRDO tried to blur the lines and confuse book holders by adopting "Where the news comes first".

Seems obvious.

At 8:14 PM, August 06, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually, "Where the News Comes First" is something KRDO's consulting firm put into place. If you look at KJCT8.com you will see the TV station also uses "Where the News Comes First." (KJ is owned by KRDO)

So, I guess it really isn't to "confuse book holders."

At 5:35 AM, August 07, 2009, Anonymous Anonymous said...

No, it wasn't the consulting firm. They were against it. It was the Corporate President who worked for KCRA as the GM in the 80's. That is why every station except 1 in the NPG group has that slogan.

Whooeee!

Some funny and crazy posts on here.

We just wanted to clear a few things up, since some people are using the KOAA name to make vitriolic comments, with which we completely disagree.

A)

We congratulate 13 on their awards. We enjoy better competition.

B)

Whoever posted about KOAA managers, must not work at KOAA. We disagree with the post, and if you do work with us then you should take your issues to your supervisor. If you feel you can't and you are that unhappy, then quit. We still have more viewers and are #1 in the ratings, so we are not sure why you would be so unhappy.

C)

Facts about KOAA Emmy Awards. Below are links to KOAA's awards. KOAA has not entered the Emmy Awards since 2002. It was a news director decision to enter back then. Awards are not at the top of our current news director's list of importance. She is more focussed on getting accurate, fair and honest news on all our platforms. As a station we've only entered the CBA's for the past few years, with the exception of a couple Murrow entries, which the reporter and photog did by themselves.

MY RESPONSE IS, I have worked with the EP at KOAA for more than 8 years, I happen to think she is one of the most forward thinking level headed managers I have ever had the pleasure to work with. And she is also my wife. So if you jerk off losers have anything else to say about her please post your name so I can look you up, and I will kick your stupid ass. OH Yeah I do have an Emmy as well, along with several other AP awards and what not, but does it matter, not really, what matters is what is your station doing to provide the viewers with the most up to date accurate and fair news as possible and KRDO you are not making it there... cut the hype.
And to my wife, you rock!

OK maybe kick your ass isn't what I should say here, because that is stooping to the level of the person who wrote what they wrote.
Before you write on these blogs you may want to consider the people whom you are writing about. I know it is easy to be a coward and hide behind an anonymous post, but that is what I need to take you as, a coward and nothing more. Hell if you had the ability to work in the biz and keep up with the times you would have a much better picture of the woman and people you are slamming in your post. But it is obvious that you are just a bitter person who is being left behind by the use of technology with the need to lash out by attacking good people from behind a vale. Well best of luck to you in your life of misery, I hope you find all that you deserve.

I like KRDO best no matter what anybody says. I watch all the stations except KOAA (don't like the age spots on the newscasters on hidef tv). Who cares if they won Emmy's or not? They all copy eachother, I mean we live in a conservative city so we get very plain news. You like what you like and that is it. I don't like KOAA cause of the way they look but they are a fine news organization as is the rest. However, personally I like KRDO best and always will.
