More Meister
I can't repeat the language, but check out the comments on the post below the superhero one. Apparently, a bunch of my readers are "According to Jim" fans. Too funny. Well, probably not if you work at KRDO.
Matt's always been a cool guy when I've talked to him (and, I should probably mention, strictly PG with his language). It's certainly not the first time there's been a blooper on local TV, but because of the language, KRDO could potentially face a pretty serious fine. Still haven't heard boo from the station, so I guess I'll find out what's up at 5:30 with everyone else.
UPDATE: Station GM Neil Klockziem came on without warning and said Meister was suspended until further notice. He said the language was against station policy and unacceptable. Mark Nelson is filling in for Meister.

If you're not professional enough to watch your own mouth on network TV, then you shouldnt be there. He's been doing this for how long now? He should know to turn off his wireless when he gets done doing his cut-in.
Get over yourself. It was an accident. Matt is human just like the rest of the world. Smile and Drive On! If he loses his job over this, my next station of choice will be 5/30.

I think the term "Focus on your own Family" applies even more.
Some of these so-called "Pro-Family" people need to losen up. Not everyone is a prude like yourself.
Mistakes do happen, and even if the guys in the control room screwed up, it was still the "talent" that spoke those words. Talent should know that when you're in a studio, you watch your language. You always have to assume that a mic is hot/on. The FCC is fining stations hundreds of thousands of dollars for stuff just like this.
How in the world did Focus get dragged into this one, Don McCullen? Matt Meister cussed on TV, and somehow, Focus was involved. Unbelievable!
Meister is one of the best in town in his field and I would venture to say "in the state". It would be a shame for him to lose his job....will Bush lose his job?
Oops. Mistakes happen....even in the world of media/journalism. Our own President of the United States used the "sh_ _" word at the recent G-8 Summit in Europe. If George W. Bush's comment is taken/accepted as a mistake and forgiven....Matt Meister's needs to be treated the same way.
mistakes happen, he apologized. enough said.
Yes, he should be watching his language. But, guess what?? He's human like the rest of us and we all make mistakes. Professional or not, we are suseptible to fumbling ...nobody's perfect. Should he be reprimaned? Yes, but not loose his job, that's the extreme. Someone who's offended by a slip of the tongue ...I feel sorry for you. Lighten up!!
He's very lucky that this didn't happen on the Harry and Patty watch!! Maybe he'll still have a job!
I'm getting a little tired of the high and mighty, including you and I, crucifying people for making mistakes. We are subject to much worse in our daily lives and he used what most consider a 'bad' word. He made a mistake, just like the rest of us do each day.
Matt Meister is the one bright spot in KRDO news...his weather reporting is great and his forecasts are well-prepared and almost always right. If they do anything to him for this faux pas, I'm never going to watch their news ever.
Leave the guy alone. He's gotta be embarrassed enough already. How many of us have used similar language? I'm a 57-yr old woman who speaks "sailor" too ...s--- slips out sometimes!
"How in the world did Focus get dragged into this one, Don McCullen? Matt Meister cussed on TV, and somehow, Focus was involved. Unbelievable!"
You don't get it. It is those types who complain about profane language in the first place, and want the government to protect they sensetive minds
Actually, I'm sure those groups (like Focus) while frowning on the language would be the first to admit that no one should pay for a simple mistake like that with his job.
"Actually, I'm sure those groups (like Focus) while frowning on the language would be the first to admit that no one should pay for a simple mistake like that with his job."
The Pro-Family don't help either with the language issue.
Our Government is ready, willing, and able to fine any station. Anything that gets them more money in their coffiers.
Sure, everyone says things they regret and we've all heard worse things coming out of the mouths of 10 year olds.
But Rule #1 in broadcasting is that you NEVER use words like that when there's a mic in the area. NEVER, EVER, EVER!
Sorry, but that's the truth. If Matt loses his job over this, he'll be much wiser in the future. A hard lesson, for sure.
Meister suspended without pay! Wow, wasn't he the one who fired Jayne Smith not long ago? That karma thing works fast!
Matt Meister shows his true colors! Get rid of him!!! Give someone else a chance! I'm all for bringing Jayne Smith back! At least she had a personality and tried very hard to make her reports interesting and informative! However, I guess that was a threat to Meister so I'm sure he had a hand in getting rid of her.
All employees are a representation of the station and especially talent. So either on the air or off it's critical to remember that. I doubt that Matt fired Jayne. General management does the hiring and firing of talent. Hopefully Matt won't lose his job though because KRDO needs all the help they can get and Matt is good at what he does.
I would like to see Jayne come back. She is by far a more personable and professional representation of the station than Matt. KKTV didn't do themselves any favors with new management and I see KRDO going down the same path.
Please -- like no one has ever uttered something that was later regretted. Easier to point the finger at someone else? Matt's a great guy -- very knowledgeable and I support him 100%. We all screw up, he just did it when he wasn't aware the mic was on. At least he was contrite enough to clearly be shaken when he apologized. Let the guy alone. And if the government does fine the station, perhaps they should start fining Hollywood too. Or maybe just fine people on the street as they SHOUT their profanities. Ever been in a line of people when the person behind you starts with their junk mouths? Matt is a stand up guy and that should be the end of it. They get rid of him and I will go to Mike Daniels on KOAA.
I am 1 of those that liked Mark and understand that mistakes happen - but I heard what he said last night and I dont think anyone has the right to speak to another person that way. If I was the person he was speaking to, I would have kicked his ass. He should be suspended and I personally wouldnt watch him again.
WOW, way to go there "tough guy" !Hey I don't like the way you post. Maybe I should "beat you up". Way to show your ability walk upright and not drag your knuckles.....sheesh.
I think Matt is the best thing going for KRDO and they would dumb to let him go. However... the station is now at the mercy of what the FCC and the new owners want. He clearly didn't mean it and apologized when he could. Yes... it is one of the cardinal rule to not swear whenever you think the mic is on. I am also one to think the operator who left the mic open should receive some kind of punishment. You have to place some blame on both. If they end up cutting him loose... he will have no problem of finding a job anywhere. I hope he can find ways or has a backup to help financially support the wife and kid right now. Good Luck Matt!!!
I feel pretty bad for Mr. Matt. He is a great weatherman. His management should consider his value to the station and address the source of his frustrations. I'm sure that he is early in his carreer, so I seriously doubt that he will do this again.
It is incredible to me that all humans make mistakes. But some people have a hard time forgiving a person for a mistake. My only question is did the guy that screwed up with the sound also get put on suspension. I don't think Matt would have said any of that if he knew his mike was on. It cracks me up how some of the people how drop the f-bomb on a regualr basis are the ones saying he should be fired. What hypocrits.
No, it's not hypocritical. It's not the same as someone cursing on the street. Apples and oranges. Broadcasting has very strict standards and the FCC has very hefty fines for this kind of thing.
Matt Meister Has Been A Meoterologist for Over 11 Years, At KRDO TV, and this is his first "Screw-up" Leave Him The Hell Alone, Good Job Matt, For 11 Years Of Continous Service, Thanks!
Well, if he's so great I'm sure he wont have any problems finding a new job in a bigger market.
Can we suspend the President? Didn't he curse in front of a much larger audience than that of Colorado Springs? Let's be realistic and remember that all of us have let a curse slip in an inappropriate situation. What happened to forgiveness?

Yeah, because they totally forgave Jayne for...what did they fire her for again? "lack of performance"?
who's jayne and why is everyone connecting this to her???
Jayne Smith was the weekend meteorologist brought in to replace Mark Nelson after he left in December. When management wanted to bring him back, Jayne developed "performance problems" and was fired after four or five months on the job. Of course since she was fired for bad performances they didn't have to pay off her contract. Funny thing. Although she seemed a little nervous at first, nobody I know ever saw any of her "terrible" performances. Of course management insists she was terrible - But this is TV and there are tapes of her shows that show otherwise. I think she has a website that shows tapes of her shows. People can decide for themselves. I hope she gets a new job soon where she's treated better.
Wow, it never ceases to amaze me what people can assume. You think they planned to bring back Mark Nelson? Mark is well on his way to bigger and better things, he's a nice guy and is helping them out so the other guys can get a little time off while a permanent replacement is secured. Mark is currntly on BECAUSE Jayne didn't work out, not as a replacement for her. Please people, get some real information before you spout a bunch or worthless junk!
That's funny! I thought Mark was on to "bigger and better things" when he left. Maybe things didnt work out and he came crawling back?
That's okay, I'm sure Mark lives in a perfect fantasy world where Matt and Marty dont talk trash about him behind his back constantly.
Here's the truth about Jayne:
She was brought in to be the eventual replacement for Nina as main anchor. Management loved her that much. She was only supposed to do weather for a few months before they fired Nina and promoted Jayne. But Nina found out about it, and Marty and Matt realized how much better Jayne was than them, so together they and several others who felt threatened conspired to develop lies about Jayne's personal life that couldn't be disproven by her in any way, and they told them to the managers. Management had no choice but to fire her. Sad, but true.
Okay, that's actually total fiction. But it ought to satisfy the Jayne conspiracy theorists out there who think there must've been sabotage or backstabbing involved in Jayne's dismissal.
And Mark really is on to bigger and better things. He works for Edward Jones investments and would love to help you secure your financial future. He's only filling in because he's a very decent guy and they're probably paying him a ton of money for his few hours of time.
Is this thing the new NewsBlab?
We all make mistakes from time to time and say things we shouldn't. Unfortuately for Matt, a lot more people heard his mistake. He appolized and I know felt very bad for what happened. I think we and the station should forgive Matt and let him continue to do what he does best--the weather.
I really hope Matt does not lose his job over the mistake. He is human just like the rest of us. I am sure everyone here has made a mistake. Let's forgive him and move on!!!!
also i wished that ms phylinski..would have a better hair do since shell be going with j cole of d49 on kxrm tv 21 and.. jayne smith didnt have any seals like a.ms. or national weather association..i checked the web site of kxmb tv and she is not there..she had "buck teeth", but i think she had wore invisible braces..she have a great bod though.i hope shell come back as the new weather anchor for that that fox station .along with mel and eric singer, hmm? interesting summer here..
I've got news for you Jayne lovers. She was terrible. I don't know what the hell you're thinking, but she was easily the worst weather person in this market...and trust me, that's saying a hell of a lot. She has no charisma, no credibility. I mean none...nada...whatsoever. Kudos to KRDO for realizing this before letting her drag the station further. Sorry to break it to ya, but as a normal, everyday viewer, I changed the channel everytime she was on.
Now, as for the Matt thing, slap his hand...suspend him, whatever...then move on. He made a mistake, but let's not judge a guy's career by 15 seconds of mistake after several years of excellence. And if KRDO was stupid enough to fire him (and trust me, it would be stupid), KKTV or KOAA should grab him instantly. He's the biggest competition they have.
Karma? Karma? Blabbing Mike, for being a former insider you sure are disconnected now. Matt actually offered to make Jayne a resume tape and a tape for her seal when he found out she hadn't saved her work. I don't know how many hours he spent on it, but it was quite a few as I saw him after our late show on several occasions in an edit bay working on it. He even enlisted one of our photogs to edit it so it would look as good as possible. Most people probably just would have wished her good luck. In fact, the examples she has on her site is the tape Matt made. That's an example of what kind of person he is. Here's some good karma Matt.
Wow, you all have way too much time on your hands......the guy swore with his mic on, and apologized....leave him be....let those without fault cast the first stone....
What in the world is wrong with you people trying to bad mouth this guy??? He screwed up once in 11 years and all the suddenly hordes of people want to jump on his back and ride him into the ground.....
WHO HERE IS PERFECT? ANYONE?
PFFFT! That's what I thought!
~conclimatio mortis!~
The person who should get suspended is the audio tech for not doing his job. For all you know he could have had it in for Matt because the same thing happened the day before. So Matt may have been wrong for the language, but the audio tech was worse for playing with the equipment.
I checked on my wife, and she is still breathing. I asked my three kids if they are all right, and sure enough, they are. Mom is ok, too. The dogs seem fine. So- I cannot see any discernible damage at my house. It seems we have all heard this language before, from Dick Cheney as well as at every mall we have been to. So, no harm, no foul. This guy didn't tell anyone to go out into a tornado, and that is his area of expertise. Let it go, let it go, let it go. Please.
I honestly cannot fathom why any human being would want to see Jayne on television. She seriously brought nothing to the station. No personality, no skills, no insight. Hell, she didn't even look good. So, what the heck does anyone see in her? In my opinion, KRDO did her a huge favor by putting her on television at all. I would have never made the mistake, but I sure as hell wouldn't have left her on after one show. She doesn't have what it takes...sorry. Maybe market 185.
I agree, the person who should get suspended is the audio tech for not doing his job. Sure, Matt made a mistake, but there were two mistakes made in this case and two people are at fault. Punish both or them equally and accept their apologies and move on. The suspension is certainly punishment enough. Don't fire the man for being human; just punish him for slipping in his intelligence and move on with a good lesson in life. Matt will learn from this mistake and the tech should learn as well but please don't fire anyone.
How did Jayne get brought into this? What's with all the hate? Didnt she get fired over a month ago?
You're all a bunch of vultures picking over bones.
I have watched weather reports in 50 or so cities across the US and Matt Meister is one of the best weatherman I have ever seen. If KRDO fires him, I'll stop watching the station. I understand they must take some action, and a short suspension seems resonable, but don't punish viewers by getting rid of one of the best people you got.
i just heard him (matt meister)come back from his vacation from omaha nebraska..and i im thinking if one of those tv stations like wowt or kmtv would love it to pick him up for them for the job oppty! he'll love it.. also watch out for joe dominguz guy on the weekends .. hell probably move on also for a better market..but jenny fullerton seems to me like she is getting skinner or having anorexia or something..
they must notbe treating their audio guys right at KRDO. it's not the first time they had adio and tech problems in that station. but at primetime, it's really very important to be on your toes.
joe dominguez is a joke of an anchor!!!!
and jayne smith needs a lot of work before she should be back on tv!!!!!
you think this tv market stinks go and live in decateur, springfield ill or maybe in evanville, indiana boy the tv stations there have choppers and satellite trucks you think that the talent here is bad?? boY go and live in tri-states.you wish to come back here!..
My dad was a meteorologist, and I have seen many in my time...good and bad. I'm sure Jayne Smith is a very nice person, but she was terrible as a weather person. As soon as she came on we changed the channel. Matt is the best in town, and if he goes, KRDO is in deep trouble. I like Marty V., but he can't carry it all himself. Matt apologized...let's be done with it.
I had to add my own two cents... Sorry to hear what happened Meister...
I used to work in The Springs... and think he is the best Meteorologist. I also work in the biz and know that this kind of thing happens... sometimes too much all due to PRODUCTION. It's always production agains talent... never understood it.. but it is what it is. Anyways... Meister... get out of there... you are awesome at forecasting... so smart... and you could get a job anywhere you want. Get the HELL out of Colorado Springs and get to a real station in a real town.
Witcher
If they fire Meister, it's not because he's "good" or "bad." It will be due to the fact that he's a liability, and someone has to carry the blame for this incident. If the FCC decides to fine, it's going to be huge. This is one of the first incidents of this nature after the fine cap got boosted to $325,000.
Also, there's no audio-engineer to blame. It was an equipment failure. This means the only person responsible for this incident is Meister himself. He knows he has a switch on his beltpack. He knows mic's can go hot at any moment.
If they get rid of Matt, there's a chance the FCC might show some lineancy on the matter. If they do not, and the FCC fines then that means everyone involved with the decision will be terminated by NP&G after the fine hits.
So, it's quite simple really: Do the GM and News Director value Meister's contribution to the news team so much that they're willing to but their own jobs on the line?
IF there was an equipment failure then fine... the FCC might some some leeway. However... more often than not the MCO who is responsible for making sure local air or network is completely shut off when switching back and forth doesn't get it done right. It sounds like to me it could have been either in this case... since in a previosu cut-in they couldn't get network air shut off while Matt was on. If that equipment in Master Control wasn't working then maybe something else should have been done. If the MCO didn't know what he was doing... then he needs to take some of the blame as well.
It is true that Matt was responsible for his words and he has already fessed up and apologized. It is true that Neil and Dave need to weigh the option between losing a good meteroologist and viewership... or the a$$es when the FCC decides what to do. I would hope that they would put their jobs on the line in this case.
