Meister on the mike

KRDO/Channel 13 meteorologist Matt Meister had some, um, choice words on the air last night when his mike stayed on after a weather update during "According to Jim." When the show started again, the mike picked up an f-bomb, and s-bomb and maybe a few miscellaneous linguistic hand grenades... for which Meister apologized profusely at the end of the 10 p.m. news.

No word on possible repercussions for Meister.

No word, either, on how many people actually watch "According to Jim" repeats.

Anybody actually hear this? I've been told a couple different versions of the, um, specific language.

YES I did hear it...the last part anyway... "if I go down and say something to those guys I will just look like a giant a-****". They were really flubbing up, I don't blame him for getting mad.

Yes, I heard it but, I hear worse every school day from 10 year olds who learned it from their mothers.

I was watching the show via Tivo, and I listened to Matt's comments a couple of times. (Wasn't sure what I heard the 1'st time.) The crew really messed up the weather update and had the audio for Jim running on top of it. It went on for the entire update - total screw-up. The language was inappropriate. But, I sure as heck don't blame him for being angry. I hope they don't fire him!

Assuming he doesn't get fired - I don't think he made any friends with his production crew.

Here's an idea: Matt Meister's weather brought to you by Orbits Gum!!

Bwahahaha! That's just classic, Mister Meister! I love it! Thanks for the laugh. =)

I told my husband what had just happened on air and he wouldn't believe me. We sat in front of the TV waiting for Mike or someone from the TV station to come back on an appoligize. I found out later that Mike did apologize on the late news. I've heard this before on bloopers and thought it was funny and embarrassing for the crew. Rather than blame someone, why don't they try to figure out a way so that this never happens again. People are human and make mistakes.

What is done is done. He apologized. Let it go. We are
all human and we all make mistakes.

I heard it and watched him apologize as well. I hear worse from people out in public. Our family was watching it and we all laughed it off. It was truly an accident on Matt's part. He should not feel responsible that someone did not shut off his mike. If they choose to fire him I will not watch local news on ABC.

I understand Matt's frustration, the sound people really messed up twice. I was not bothered by the language.

I have it on TiVo! I couldn't believe it happened, but don't blame him one bit and got a good laugh. If it's anyone's fault, it's the people who didn't do their f*ing job (like Meister said) in the first place!

I love it - first G.W. with a mic flub, then our local weather man.

Guess you never know who might hear you!

Haha! Nothing like a good 'ol comedy blooper. Poor guy though! Hope he gets to keep his job. Mistakes happen with EVERYONE!! Some just have more humor than others. And yes, I have made PLENTY of them in my lifetime.

For those who have it on Tivo: how about uploading it to YouTube so the rest of us can enjoy it.

It's not the announcers's mistake when things of this nature happen and they will happen...this was a technical error that announcers have completely nothind to do with...

Matt Meister shows his true colors! Get rid of him!!! Give someone else a chance! I'm all for bringing Jayne Smith back! At least she had a personality and tried very hard to make her reports interesting and informative! However, I guess that was a threat to Meister so I'm sure he had a hand in getting rid of her.

Hey newsjunkie...one of the first things you learn in broadcasting, radio or tv, is that you ALWAYS treat the mic as if it's live. Doesn't matter if your crew screws up, what you say on the air is your responsibility.

Better start making those demo tapes Matt, and leave out the F bombs :-)

Leave him alone, it's over, time to move on.

It was just a mistake that we all could (or do) make in our jobs;
maybe some form of disipline should be imposed, but he shouldn't be fired. the station needs to share the blame for what caused his frustration.
on a lighter note, he is now in the same club with lisa lyden; she once let a string of profanity fly
over the air that would have made a sailor blush. she apologised, and nothing happened to her.

I never remember Lisa L - "The News Goddess" ever slipping up on the mic... when was that???!!!

ORBITS gum! Now thats funny

I saw the Lisa L. incident, and what Matt said was innocent compared to what came out of her mouth. That was MANY years ago, and she still has a job! He had a legit reason for being p.o.ed...she was talking about how f*&^%$ up she got at Cowboys the night before. Leave the poor guy alone!

Thanks for the 411 on the Lisa Lydon. The thing playing against Matt in this scenario is the FCC fines have increased by an exhorbitant rate - ever since the "wardrobe malfunction" at the Super Bowl. Lisa'a language probably cost a few thousand dollars to the company. The FCC fines as the are today could cost the station 10x as much as Lisa's. (I posted this on the other thread too) as much as I am sympathetic to: "he was frustrated", "everybody slips up", "kids hear worse on the playground".... bottom line is if Matt Meister (or anyone) costs their boss 100s of thousands of dollars - they will likely get fired.

Sorry Matt

if: fine > MattMeisterSallary
then: MattMeister = unemployed.

This is one example that when the stations try to go for cheap help, well the ones behind the scenes that is, you get "quality" work screwing up the board work. I am surprised that I have not heard him say something straight out in the broadcast that there are "stupid" people working there. See it at 11 as well. Geez.....

FYI: many production crew members at KRDO make $7/hr, including the master control operator who made the open-mic flub. You can make more money - literally - almost anywhere else.

I think it was hysterical-it was like you didn't believe what you were hearing. Newsrooms are high energy/high anxiety places and bloopers are bound to happen. My sister sat in on a filming at CNN & she said it was crazy-F-bombs going off all over the place. It's unfortunate there is no room for error with the FCC (the FCC won't let me be...). I hope something can be worked out & Meister can keep his job & the fine isn't "too dear." Who is Jayne Smith? Obviously her mother is still po'ed.

At 9:55 PM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let's not bring back Jayne Smith, and just say that we did! She has the personality of a door knob. The weather Meister has become a fixture in the late night tv news, and is the most trusted when it comes to weather. We are all HUMAN! Get over it. I agree with anonymous below, if Mr. Meister is let go I will no longer turn to local ABC news for my daily updates.

It was no big fricking deal! He said a few bad words, SO WHAT! The people supporting him need to be looking for new jobs, not him! KRDO has some very sloppy behind the scene workers that didn't do their jobs - they should be looking for new ones, not Meister!

What happened to Eric Singer (the manniquin) Melissa and Mike anyway? Suddenly they were gone!

I've been gone from the Springs for a while, but I like him already. Madsen was a snoozer for years, about time ya'll got some spunk there.

OMG... that is some funny stuff. I can't believe I just heard about this now. (sorry ex KRDO employee here) And as to the comment above mine, don't forget about the legendary John Karroll. John has got to be one of the funniest people I have ever had the pleasure of working with!

Matt, I am very surprised. I use to swear often, but I think I grew up and my words have changed. My children (4 and 12 gkids) had me change my life. "When I became a man I put away childish things...let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight - my Lord!!" I'm the "yellow jacket" who waved at u at the AFA football game. If u did say what they say...please clean it up. LJ
