Fox 21's new morning news

Anyone have some thoughts on KXRM/Channel 21's new morning news? I caught the last half-hour (weekends have a way of wiping my memory clear, leaving me a tabula rasa on Monday mornings).

From what I saw, Hynes and Brookbank seemed to be a good pair. Tim Elbertson, the new meteorologist, has a likable presence, but... he's a big guy and on TV he looked like the Incredible Hulk. They're going to have to dig a trench next to the desk to put him in -- right now he looks like he's going to reach over and crush the puny anchors with his massive hands.

Tim seemed like a really funny guy when I stopped by the station the other day, so he should offer a lighter take on the weather than we get from Marty V, Craig and Brandon B.

Obviously, I only saw the lightest part of the newscast. Seemed OK for the first time out -- the wire stories they were using felt a little thrown together. I'll write myself a note to watch the whole shebang tomorrow.

I think there's a niche out there for Fox for viewers who prefer local news after 7. We'll just have to see if they can find it.

Not too bad. About what you'd expect on Day One. A few jitters, a few hiccups, a few fumbles. But overall, not bad. Not overwhelmingly great, either. I agree about the weather guy. Huge. But not bad. It'll take a lot of work and a lot of time to pull people away from Craig or Marty, and Brandon at ch. 11 is finally at home in his position. The roving reporter seems a little green, but then so are most of the other reporters at FOX21 straight out of college. She definitely fits the fun and smiley mold of Stephanie Ross at 11 rather than the more serious Rachel Hoffenberg at 5/30 or Jennifer Fullerton at 13. Jeannette is Jeannette. Same Jeannette that had fans when she was at ch. 11, only with a lot more chat and apparently an opportunity to do some sports anchoring, which we know she loves. She should raise her chair, though. She looks sunken too far below the desk. The male anchor did fine, although he did say San Loo-ee Valley instead of San Loo-is. He'll learn. Some of the chats seemed forced, but they'll gel with time.

More competition is better for viewers, and the morning race seems closer than ever. KOAA's new anchor Adam is doing a good job, better than his predecessor and finally placing strength alongside Georgiann. KKTV is really ramping up the smiling and laughter and lighter fare, likely a counter move to KRDO which has abandoned the fluff for a ton more actual news content to fit the "Where the News Comes First" brand under the new ownership. So KXRM jumping into the fray will make all the stations work harder, which will benefit viewers.

Predictions for November:

KOAA regains #1, but barely
KRDO slips back to #2
KKTV still at #3, but not far behind
KXRM will be a distant 4th, but not off the map

I enjoyed FOX 21 Morning News.

Like the 9PM newscast its building but hey I was suprised how the 9PM truly stepped up and made themselves good in the news game.

I really don't care for national morning shows and their are a few little things I don't like about KOAA (Craig Elliot on location way too much especially on Fridays) and KRDO's morning newscasts (The Morning Drive and Sports segment) so I am going to give KXRM a few weeks of my time.

I do like that you get weather on the 2's during the 6AM hour. The traffic reports are a set back similer to how KRDO-TV handles traffic.

The interview set is cramped but that is what you get with a small space of studio. They did pull it off at least I think.

Also liked Joel Cole and sparkling juice at the end.

Their were less hiccups in the first morning newscast on KXRM than the very first in-house newscast about a year ago.

I think KOAA will take the top spot from KRDO in November, but barely. Don't be suprised if KXRM is on the heels of KKTV. That can happen...maybe not in November but I doubt they will be a distant fourth for long if not at all.

Yeah, in the past I've written about "mornings" generally when I've done the Nielsen stories, but with four players at 6 a.m., I'll have to start breaking out the 5 a.m. hour and have a look at how KXRM fares against the network morning shows.

The traffic reports need much improvement. Every time I've caught them, all the anchors do is put up a camera shot and say, "Gee, looks like traffic's slowing a bit at XXX location." That's lame and a waste of time if there's no actual accident info, etc.

Yeah, good point. They'll need to partner with Metro or Total Traffic, or come up with something better on their own.

I watched for about 45 minutes this morning and think the chemistry between Jeanette and Mike is quite good. It's light and informative. Segments are short and interesting. Weather guy interacts well with rest of the anchors. Reporter taking off in the plane is typical cheesy newbie reporter stuff. Why do new reporters, and some anchors, in general, still sound and act like high school kids rather than mature reporters?

At 11:08 AM, August 07, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Because this market pays incoming reporters just enough so that they don't qualify for welfare, but not enough to allow them to stand on their own two feet. That doesn't excuse the way they act, but many of them are, in fact, not yet mature adults. Remember, the $23,000 these new reporters make is considered a step up when they just came from a market where they made $18,000 salaried with no overtime pay. Most reporters in this market are between 23 and 28 years old. But then again, so are many of the teachers of your kids. And there's a good chance the young reporters and young teachers are partying together on weekends acting very unlike mature and responsible adults. But hey, kids will be kids.

KRDO-TV does not do either and you that to promote KRDO-AM-FM and they use Metro.

Don't relie on TV for traffic in this market you guys. The one who does it best is KKTV.

So low pay equals immaturity? There are a bunch of mature people in markets this size that aren't making a whole heck of a lot of money!
How about newbie reporters/anchors trying to emulate someone who's 30...or 35.
You do that and you will be in a medium to large market faster than you can say..."now back to you guys."

The "presence" of a seasoned reporter comes only with experience. If your going to hire new reporters, your going to have to accept the fact that they are going to be a little green... As for what the reporter covers... just remember it's approved by someone, it's not like these reporters just run off and do a story with no approval and no oversight.

When it comes to morning shows, what are people looking for? The fun or the serious? A combination of both? It seems as if the morning shows all shift between fun and light hearted and serious news. What works?

At 6:39 AM, August 08, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's why there are college radio/tv stations, internships at bigger stations and entry level markets to get that experience. News directors in this market shouldn't be hiring people fresh out of college, unless they are unusual.
In print, you um, wouldn't know like, how old a print reporter is, um, if you just read, like the story and stuff. If we hadn't seen a picture of Andy W, we wouldn't know if he was 23, 30 or 45 just by reading a few of his stories. There's gotta be, in the dozens to hundreds of tapes that get sent to news directors, one or two that stand out.

I haven't seen it, yet hopefully Joey Joe Joe Cole has invested in the following...

* Lighting designer
* Decent Mics
* Arthouse for graphics

With all due respect, someone in this town needs to raise the bar of quality newscasts. It seems that the CBS affiliate has made some roads, yet I saw better produced news in the 1980's in La Crosse, Wisconsin that is done here.

Your friend & mine,

TC

And in the 70's, when I was there, it was even better! (La Crosse news)

These things usually speak more to the GM and corporate. News Directors ask, GM's and Corporate Big Wigs say yes or no. I wouldn't praise CBS too much. They certainly didn't use a lighting designer.

I was born in Madison, Wis. (market 85) and I've watched plenty of TV in Spokane, Wash. (market 77) and Green Bay (market 69) and they are all pretty much like the Springs. You've got the anchors who have been around forever, the green reporters right out of Nowhere, Wyoming, and the up and comers in between.

So the mix isn't going to change. I think it makes more sense to criticize the individual reporters and anchors on the wrong track and applaud the people making strides than to issue blanket condemnations.

Speaking of which, doesn't it seem that Stacey Kaiser over at 13 is really improving?

At least they gave her a few months TO improve unlike some other, more qualified weather personalities KRDO has had in the past...

you're all delusional -- televsion news here is awful!! Let me just hit a few of my favorites - You've got the news anchor with a face made for radio, the Leprechaun Sports Anchor that always points his index finger during EVERY SINGLE BROADCAST, the Weatherman With the Wacky Wannabe Weather Wonderments. There's the Sports reporter with a last name composed of a strange conglomerate of vowels and consonants, the Weather Reporter that sounds like he took speech lessons from Bullwinkle. And lets not forget the neverending morning Weather Report which seems to last and last and last and last, only to interrupted by 5 minutes of news and then another 10 minutes of weather that seems to last and last and last and last....not to mention that every single road here in town appears to be a corridor of some sort...what a Mickey Mouse production we've got going on in this town.
