More more Meister

I went to the Wal-Mart down the street from KRDO to hear what people were saying about Matt's slip of the tongue and suspension. People there were in a pretty forgiving mood - I talked to maybe a dozen people and everyone said "He slipped, he apologized, that should be it."

Don't let their opinions stop you, though. Weigh in here with your thoughts.

An F-bomb and an S-bomb. Not all that sure it merits suspension without pay. Not even sure it rises to the level of suspension. Take him off the air for a few days but not suspension without pay.

My impression of KRDO's statement this evening was that Matt will be carpooling with Jayne for their next weather position.

It is unfortunate for this to happen to Matt. He is a great guy and loves his job and does it well. With that kind of statement... it sounds like he will not be back. However... the station may keep him. Who knows... but it is obvious that the final decision is up to the FCC and the new owners. They will lose a lot of viewers over this if he is canned. Good Luck Matt and keep your chin up. I guarantee he will not have any trouble finding a job.

Matt's a liability, and a vicious one at that. Hopefully KRDO's management grows a pair and permenantly rectifies this situation.

At 7:31 PM, July 26, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why does everyone think that Matt is "vicious". Is everyone still thinking he single-handedly got Jayne fired? It was company/management decision made just before new owners. She was given guidance and tips to improve and didn't act upon them. Matt wasn't 100% responsible. It was not his job to hold her hand 24/7. For those who think that he was hiding out or should have been there to help her out when he was gone on vacation. He had to spend all of the comp days he earned by working 6 days a week. The new company has a "no comp time" policy and those days were not to be carried over.

At 7:37 PM, July 26, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Speaking of policy, the "New company" has a 4 step process to terminate someone that KRDO's management failed to follow. Have fun with those investigations!

Ummmm what investigations???

So the guy swore on TV. Is it really that big of a deal? He thought he was off mic. It wasn't during a newscast. Get over it already!

Didn't President Bush swear on an open mic the other day with an S-bomb? hmmm...Maybe he should be suspended without pay!

At 12:16 AM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Here's an evil thought... So Meister was foaming at the mouth, and pissed at the sound crew. What if someone on sound crew purposely turned on his mike? Perhaps for a bit 'o revenge? It doesn't sound like Matt and the crew got along very well before this happened. SAVE MATT!

Meister had a BIG part in firing Jayne. No one here has told the truth with regards to how Jayne was hired and then fired. Pay backs are a b@#*!. Or as Meister might say a f*@!ing b@#*!

At 6:27 AM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

On the Jayne thing: I have had several different sources say basically the same thing: She didn't live up to performance standards set forth to her. She didn't respond to tips and guidance given to her... therefore she was let go. I guess some of you have never been demoted or fired for not doing your job. I have been there... but a long time ago. If it was one person saying one thing then maybe. However... when several sources say the same thing... then she obviously didn't do her job. I don't believe there is a conspriracy here. Someone must just be mad because their favorite person was kicked off the air.

At 6:49 AM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Uh. What part of her job did she "obviously not do"?

At 6:51 AM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was watching when it happened. I surely did not hear any of his slip-ups. It was blocked out by According to Jim's dialogue. I have really enjoyed his work on the station (a welcome relief from the frozen smile on Nelson's face!).
We should all thank the Gazette for its paragraph stating that if just one person complains to the FCC, the station will be hit with a fine. There are enough nutcakes out there who will do just that, for the sake of doing it !!!!

At 7:00 AM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I enjoyed watching Jayne Smith and didn't realize that she was actually fired. For what? Matt uses the "F" word on-air and gets suspended. What could Jayne do that was worse than that? Shoot somebody??

Its nice that KRDO management didn't think she was "good enough" for me to be watching. But, in my opinion she did a fine job. In fact, in some respects I preferred her weathercasts to Matt's & Marty's. But, that's just my opinion. Too bad it doesn't count.

I'm glad that people can take a survey at KRDO and get everyone to agree that she was so bad she needed to be fired. But among the people I talked to, real viewers, nobody thought that she was doing a bad job. In fact, while most everyone was glad to see Mark Nelson back we hoped that Jayne wasn't pushed out to make room for him.

KRDO has themselves in a bit of a bind now. Maybe they should admit that they were a little hasty in dumping Jayne and see if they can get her to come back.

As usual, the conservativism here rears its sanctimonious head; everyone slips, yet the manager who came on looked like he could use a chill pill- way to tight and serious. Matt apologized; I think it's time to move on. I haven't seen the segment, but would love to.

At 7:21 AM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

They will never admit they were wrong when they fired Jayne. They will also never admit or tell the truth. I think Mr Wineke should do a piece on what really happened to Jayne. The official word will be completely different than the truth though. The station will sugar coat the facts and always make it appear like they did Jayne a favor and wish her well. You can see some of that in previous postings here. These have to be from people inside KRDO. They stink of it!
I stopped watching channel 13 after they fired Jayne Smith. My station of choice is now channel 11. I don't care what Meister and the others say now because I won't be hearing or seeing them.
How do you complain to the FCC to get the station to pay the $300K anyway?

About a year ago, I was in a cheerleading group that went to KRDO before we were to perform at a Sky Sox game. Matt Meister gave us a tour of the studio, showed us how the weather equipment and teleprompters work, and even let us try out the weather forecast green screen. He was very professional and kind. I used to mainly watch CBS (Channel 11), but after that tour, Matt was part of the reason I started watching ABC (Channel 13) more. I also used to complain alot about the weather from Channel 11, because most of the time it wasn't that accurate. Channel 13 was very accurate or very close. Matt made it entertaining to watch the weather, even the updates in the middle of shows. Almost everyday, I watch Entertainment Tonight and The Insider on KRDO at 6 pm. Lately, the station has had some audio issues. For example, on Tuesday during The Insider, right before a piece on a popular Hollywood plastic surgery that was botched, they went to a weather alert. I couldn't hear anything, but I thought maybe the sound was really low, so I turned it up in hopes of hearing something. No such luck. About halfway through, the audio came on. Some of the audio issues have been during these shows as well as my favorite, LOST, which also had a brief audio issue. (They also had a color issue on ET and The Insider one night) Is it really Matt's fault that they had some audio issues again on Tuesday night? Yes, as my father keeps saying, "It was unprofessional." But, would you stay professional if you knew that the station was once again having audio problems? I really can't say that I blame Matt. Some say it's his fault that he didn't turn his microphone off, but, then again, you could also say that it's the fault of the audio and visual room for not making sure that it was the show's audio we were picking up, or maybe it's both. My mom and I agree that Matt should not be fired. If he is, then they should take into consideration fixing their audio problems to prevent something like this happening again.

I quit watching 11 news because of
poor management decisions. To get rid of a great weatherman over a
"heat of the moment slip" would cause me to go straight to ch 5 and
never come back. Besides, who's the guy responsible for shutting off the sound for the weather break in, sure hope he gets at least the same treatment.
We're all human.
Forget about it.

I quit watching Chanel 13 because of their fowl-mouthed weather man. Funny how that works out.

At 8:06 AM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Mistakes happen and I still think it's the tech people who are more at fault over this than anyone. Suspended without pay is too harsh. I'll never watch KRDO news again..sorry, I'd rather watch KOAA from now on. I used to switch over to KRDO for the weather cause they've been right more times than anyone...but no more.

Matt should look to a bigger market and move. He has what it takes to make it in a bigger market. There's a reason why things happen...maybe that's it.

I hope he doesn't get fired over this - Granted it's a MAJOR mistake (I'm sure in Broadcasting 101 they teach "no cussing anywhere near a mic").

On the other hand - If I made a mistake that cost my company 10s of thousands of dollars, I'd be fired.

Matt is just like any one of us he is human. We all curse . Some of us more than others . As for the fines that need to be paid for cursing that is stupid. They should fine the the station for all the sex scenes that they show on TV. Would you rather have you children hear an accidental cuss word or have them watch a program that shows sex. Please dont fire Mr. Meister over this accident he is a great weather reporter and he is the only reason I watch news 13. If he is fired I will stop watching news 13 and I hope a lot of other people do too.

Having worked in media for a time, the broadcaster runs the risk of being heard. What is frustrating is having individuals that have about as much dedication to their job as they do in their relationships. Worked with too many that have a care less attitude and when something like this happens, it is the broadcast, not the dork that was doing a visual colon scan when they were suppose to be manning the board.

Behind you Mike.

Words are powerful, understandably; and yes, TV and any broadcasting company's are "exposed" more than most businesses; therefore, they are watched and criticized more closely. I, personally, think KRDO has the most professional and the most accurate news casting and weather predictions than any of the local TV stations. Jayne? Well, in my opinion, I didn't care for her style...she was not "polished" for my taste. I especially enjoy GMC's Marty's weather forecast. He's my favorite!! Of course all people have different "tastes" and "attractions"; therefore, what suits one will differ from others. How nice it is to have 'choices'! That's what makes America Tops!! So, after all said, I'm sorry to hear that Jayne lost her job for her sake, but things play out for reasons; there is probably a better position for her elsewhere. As far as Matt? Get over it, folks! It was an "audio" problem--obviously. Matt does a fine performance and delivers weather reporting KRDO excellently and would be a down-right shame to have issue blown-out of portion and him "chastised." Realizing that the "law" is the "law"; but, after reading the viewers comments, it appears unanimous that Matt is well-liked and respected by KRDO's viewers!!! Keep up the good work. Ya can't beat KRDO's newscasting!! Great Team!!

I like Matt....wish he would not have screwed up.

But:

doing something that can get your employer fined $300k = your fired.

Period. If KRDO can get fined that much for such a mishap, then I am willing to bet that at some time or another it was explained to him (and every on-air personality) that doing this can bring substantial fines.

Sometimes, I curse like a sailor, but I make a large effort to "reign it in" at work in order to be a professional.

I feel sorry for Matt for slipping, but I don't think KRDO is to blame for this one. If KRDO can talk their way out of a fine, they will probably keep him.

All emotions aside, it's strictly business.

First of all, whether you abhor foul language or not, Matt Meister should not be punished. It wasn't his fault the sound guy forgot to turn Matt's mic off. If anything, the sound guy should be the one getting in trouble. Matt had no idea he was on air and, if he had cursed knowing he was on air, then yes, he should have been punished. Otherwise, it was just an accident that could have happened to anyone.

I love how you all paint Matt as a saint. Do you really know him? Have you met him? Are you aware of his foul mouth in and around the workplace? Are you aware that he constantly bad-mouths fellow employees?

KRDO would be doing themselves a favor by getting rid of him.

At 2:59 PM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Based on that post, obviously you know him. Or maybe you just pretend you do and mask yourself behind "anonymous"...

Regardless, crap happens and humans are prone to error (insert bad joke here).

I'm sure if your allegations were accurate and it is as bad as you're making it out to be, I would assume there should be some form of documentation in the HR files where these issues were discussed with him. This should then be a firing offense, rather than suspension. Thus, I doubt the accuracy of your post.

Forgive and forget and don't fire Matt Meister! He and Marty are the best weathermen on our stations! I have to say I did switch to a different channel every time Jayne Smith came on because she just was not up to the standards of Matt and Marty. Matt apologized for the problem (and I truly feel it was the techs mistake) so let him come back on!

At 3:17 PM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

If Matt Meister had a hand in having Jayne Smith canned then I applaud him. Jayne had a terrible on screen presence. I cringed whenever I heard her speak about "thundershtorms" and "temprasures". Equally disturbing was watching her constantly lean her face into the camera (reminiscent of the 3-D effect of SCTV's "Monster Chiller Horror Theater").

I sincerely hope Matt stays on at KRDO. Granted, he dropped several expletives. On the bright side, he did pronounce them properly.

At 3:23 PM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I really enjoy watching Matt, much more than the other channels. He and Marty always seem so personalable and it is human to error. I will switch to another channel if he gets fired. I saw According to Jim when it happened and was not offended. I thought it was funny. He made a mistake, he apologized, let's all forgive him.

I've got news for you Jayne lovers. She was terrible. I don't know what the hell you're thinking, but she was easily the worst weather person in this market...and trust me, that's saying a hell of a lot. She has no charisma, no credibility. I mean none...nada...whatsoever. Kudos to KRDO for realizing this before letting her drag the station further. Sorry to break it to ya, but as a normal, everyday viewer, I changed the channel everytime she was on.

Now, as for the Matt thing, slap his hand...suspend him, whatever...then move on. He made a mistake, but let's not judge a guy's career by 15 seconds of mistake after several years of excellence. And if KRDO was stupid enough to fire him (and trust me, it would be stupid), KKTV or KOAA should grab him instantly. He's the biggest competition they have.

Matt is a great person! Almost everyone on live tv has a slip of tongue eventully. I don't really think that it's that big of a deal, does it really need to be front page news? Matt is that best weather forcaster KRDO has ever had. It's no way near bad enogh to fire him, and if the do i will never whacth KRDO again!!

At 5:10 PM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm a Jayne lover! And I know that she does not have alot of experience in weather forecasting but we all have to start somewhere...right? However, to not be given a chance and canned after just a few months shows the true heart of KRDO. I would like to see Matt Meister's beginning weather tapes from 11 years ago. He probably sucked as well. Of course, it's a cut-throat industry in almost every job today. You have to be professional(no mistakes), experienced, educated, competitive, and work for peanuts. If you make one mistake, your gone! The same should apply to Matt Meister!

At 5:18 PM, July 27, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Alot of this has been said, but again - Matt apologized, move on. He has a good presence on camera - Jayne did not! We would turn the channel everytime she was on like other people seem to have done. If they get rid of Matt over this - KRDO can count on another family switching stations. BRING HIM BACK.

I have watched KRDO evening news almost exclusively for 22 years. In the past, when the weekend crew was on, there were numerous mistakes happening, camera misques, people talking over other people or video not working etc. Mistakes happen! I'm sure Matt was unaware his Mic was on. Which points to the audio crew as well as anyone. Suspension without pay is uncalled for. Suspension with pay maybe. Matt is a huge asset to KRDO, since Vince and Kelly left and they have Nina, Matt and Rob with John the broadcast is much more enjoyable. I hope to see Matt back on the air soon. Otherwise he will become someone elses asset.
