Speaking of local news

You should start seeing promos for KOAA's new 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. newscasts today. The new newscasts will launch July 16 on KOAA's News First Now cable channel (seen locally on Comcast channel 9).

The station is also introducing Laura Rojas as the anchor for those newscasts, along with meteorologist Mike Madson. Rojas comes from the CBS affiliate in Amarillo, Texas, where she was a morning anchor and also helmed the 5 p.m. newscast on the Spanish-language Univision station.

...nice face, but i hope she doesn't try to speak spanish during the newscast...she should be telling her spanish only speaking viewers to learn english or go back to mexico.

She could speak Spanish to me all day long, even if I could only understand a few words :-)

LOL! No kidding. Very pretty.

But I completely agree with the posting of "Anon" #1. If you're in the US to live/work... speak English! If I were to move to another country I would expect myself to learn THEIR language. I wouldn't be so arrogant as to expect the native speaking people of the foreign country I was visiting or living in to learn my language because I was either too lazy or too stupid to learn theirs.

Don't expect too much from Hynes. She will not be doing for them what KXRM was hoping. She just doesn't have the personality for a morning show like that. Watch and learn.

This is so stupid that anonymous and eli the mad man to put a person down because she is moving to KOAA to bring on a newscast. What are you, God? to judge this person that you don't know??? She is going to bring a newscast to English speaking people. I am a hispanic person who was born in Texas with languages of both English and Spanish. What are you going to tell me? Just because I speak English go back to Texas??? Let her do the job that KOAA 5/30 wants her to do and bring the ratings up.

Hmmm. What is it you think KXRM was hoping to get from Hynes? (Sounds like someone didn't get the job they applied for) Perhaps it's not personality but creditability they are seeking from her (She certainly provides plenty of that and she's a class act). Do your research it's not the Jeanette Hynes show there will be two more people on the morning team. When they are all in place perhaps you should watch and learn.

I have been living in Colorado for 8 years now and my primary language is Spanish. I have adopted English for necessity. It bothers me of the comments made by anonymous and eli the mad man made of professional newspeople who speaks both languages. When the orginial language for Colorado more than 150 years ago was SPANISH!!! More than a century ago when nobody was considered illegal or other words because this was not a country yet. Where did your ancestors came from??? They came from other countries to live in American, land of the free. So like the old saying goes for you "Love it or Leave it. Let the new anchor person do her job, either English or Spanish and you do your job, leave other people alone. In this country I have learn to respect people of all races, from all parts of the world, including yourselves, because your ancestors cross the oceans from other parts of the world to arrive here to America. And our ancestors cross just from south of the border to become citizens. People from news organizations move across the nation to work to bring us the news. I welcome this new anchor person to Colorado Springs with open arms and will welcome her to my home.

Hey Cecilia... thanks for the comments. No, really - I'm being sincere. Know why? Because the ability to have differing opinions is what makes this country - THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the land of the FREE - so great. It's a country where you and I can have completely different viewpoints, viewpoints that fly in the face of the government without fear of being thrown in jail or assassinated.

Unlike Mexico. Where you can't. A country where daily THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of its people flee to go to a better country.

This is NOT Mexico anymore. This is the USA. When this land defaults to the next great ruler of the world (it will not be Mexico by the way), and if I'm alive (which I won't be either because I'll die fighting for this country or be long dead anyway) I'll gladly learn to speak whatever language they speak.

We may have been a bit incentive about the new anchor speaking Spanish... but it tells ya just how sick of it we are. An opinion we're allowed to have because we live in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

A few comments to clarify some things:

First off, the comment about the next great ruler of the world... like the Roman Empire, I believe that as great as our nation is, its on the precipice of ruin. All of the world's great powers through out the ages have fallen. So will this one. It's just a matter of time. History teaches us that. Sadly, history is a subject most Americans are unfamiliar with.

Secondly, you are absolutely correct... this country is made up of immigrants from around the world. My family came from Croatia. Our neighbors are Irish, Italian and God knows what. But guess what? We all speak ENGLISH - the official language of this country that we call home. If THOSE immigrants hadn't learned the language... we wold not be speaking English as this country's official language. But they did, and we are.

In fact, I remember my dad telling me that his father wouldn't teach him the native tongue because he said they lived in America now. That was back in the 1940's and '50s.

Not learning the language now... pathetic. Because NOT learning it shows complete and utter disrespect to the country that has taken you in - and its people.

At 10:07 AM, June 22, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

This intolerance is stunning. Our nation has always been built and operated on the backs of our immigrants. The dynamics of the migration over the past several decades are much different than those of the original Euro-invasion. It's been much larger and much faster. This means that entire parts of various US cities allow someone to live and function here without having to learn English. You may hate this fact, but it keeps all the goods and services you enjoy every day less expensive.

Meanwhile, if you want to let someone know that you think he's an idiot - go with "you're," as in "you are." There's an irony in commanding someone to learn English when you've not commanded it yourself.

I don't why people are getting so bend out of shape because the new anchor is bilingual. Her previous job required her to speak English on one station and Spanish on the other. So what?????
Her job here will require that she speak English.....and Mike Madson can speak Finnish :-)

One of the many Anonymous people too afraid to use their real name said...

to anonymous and eli the mad man, you both are racist.

I was waiting for someone to say this. So you come in here behind your anonymous tag and have the "courage" to judge me? Then spout off like you're holier then thou? You need to go back to the books to relearn what racist means.

Just because I don't want to accept having a bilingual nation (look at what happened to Yugoslavia when they tried that) does not mean I'm racist.

Amador, Cecilia and cease the hateful language has a point to what is said. Horray for the 3 of them and God shall judge the racist people because God speaks all languages and holds no barriers to His people.

And I don't have a point only because it doesn't jive with what you believe? Hmmm... interesting. I like your hypocrisy. It works for you. Oh, and by the way... since you've judged me a racist, here's a little Bible verse for ya... Matthew 7:1 - "Judge not, that you may not be judged."

Don't bother going religion on me... I went to Christian schools all the way through High School, then studied world religions as a minor in college. I know the Bible and can debate that topic too.

what's the matter eli, can't handle the truth about you??? Just leave everything to the professionals and keep your opinions to yourself. that is why nobody likes you here

At 2:42 PM, June 23, 2007, Blogger Eli the Mad Man said...

Hahahaha! This is just too easy.

Looks like everyone needs a refresher course on 1) AMERICAN history, 2) the Constitution of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (1st and 14th Amendments), and 3) the definition of certain words. I could throw in a joke about knowing/learning English (the topic of this debate), but I'll leave it alone. :)

So yet another "brave" Anonymous person has spoken:

what's the matter eli, can't handle the truth about you??? Just leave everything to the professionals and keep your opinions to yourself. that is why nobody likes you here

Can't handle the truth? What... that I'm a so called racist? Do you see me responding to any of the crap here out of emotion and rage, or spouting "send them back"? Nope. Oh, and I'm still here - out in the open. Unlike you, having to hide to speak your mind. So how exactly has my actions provided you with the "insight" to say I can't handle the truth exactly? That comment makes no sense whatsoever.

Is this is the best YOU can do? Whoever YOU are. Who is anyone in this forum for that matter? Who are these "professionals" that I seem to have missed? Do you let these "professionals" lead you around by the short hairs (apparently)?

BTW, don't much care if you like me or not. I got enough friends, thanks. I just happen to really, really love a good debate. ;)

A few sayings I like to live by: "Sometimes 'The Majority' only means that all the fools are on the same side." and "It is better to be hated for what you are than to be loved for what you are not."

Wrap your noggin around that, "Anonymous." Oh, and next time... try adding something (beneficial, constructive, pertinent) to the conversation. Thanks. ;)

KOAA is taking a big chance expanding the newscast to cable. I'm sure that is researched to the point where make-up and hairstyles will match the daypart. I kind of wish they would switch and put Mike Daniels on the cablecast. 5/30 is so lucky to have the weather talent and having Mike Madson on the main channel can only help them continue their media dominance.
p.s.
welcome to town new anchor person.

well about jenny hines .. i watched her on kk.she was decent anchor.but im just like to know ?? why cant these "tv station news directors" cant give a chance at hiring locally??like u.c.c.s and c.s.u-pueblo ..??i mean that they have a lot neat commmunications majors just waiting to have a job here.why does it have to be out of staters ??i dont understand ?there a fellow who worked in cable tv in 1980s and also public tv here and he couldnt get on just for a tv news photog assignment here..the people always complain that we dont have anyone to fill those positions locally .and there are people who wants those jobs here.and by the way..i lived in amarillio,tx in the 1980s and im not a "racist".but i do feel that we are losing great tv talent here locally.. ijust reallly wished that these news directors would say to themselves gosh there a real good person to do the news here for my tv station..

To the last Anonymous poster who doesn't understand why UCCS or CSU-Pueblo students aren't made local anchors---There are VERY, VERY few recent college graduates who have enough experience to land a job in this market with just the limited skills they learned at UCCS or CSU-P. Tech jobs and other behind-the-scene jobs, yes. But on-air? Very rare to have those abilities to compete in this market on that level.

At 6:34 AM, June 25, 2007, Anonymous Anonymous said...

That's correct: you graduate with your Mass Communications degree, start in a market like Grand Junction, Cheyenne or Casper, then gravitate to a bigger market like Colorado Springs, once you get some experience under your belt.

What's baffling me is, why you hate mongers are commenting on this woman's race or the fact that she speaks Spanish. I'm sure that she is a natural born or a naturalized citizen of the United States, which makes her "legal" but why is that coming into question at ALL!?
I'm sure the News Director and hiring managers of KOAA have done an exhaustive search and in their trained, professional experience see her as a top notch professional journalist who will deliver the news accurate, concisely and to be unbiased. This woman, from her bio, speaks both languages fluently and she is to be applauded not criticized. Yes we live in America and the "official" language is English, but we are a land of immigrants. Always have been and always will be. The only "native" Americans are the indigenous people that were here LONG before you Eli and the rest of you intolerant people.
I have seen some of Laura Roja's "trailers" that KOAA has been airing and she is articulate, charming and forthcoming. I have read her bio and from that, she is educated, trained in news journalism and well versed in various other forms of media. And Eli, how can you agree with what the first comment(er) said. It boarded on bigotry and hatefulness.
No where in KOAA's introduction did it say Laura Rojas was going to be delivering the news in Espanol (Spanish for you "by GOD we live in America speak English" people). Seems to me that the people who commented on and the person(s) that agreed with this stupid statement, "...she should be telling her Spanish only speaking viewers to learn English or go back to Mexico( Dear Anonymous, I cleaned up your fragmented sentence and the correct usage of the words Spanish and Mexico you ignorant ass)" should go to their local community college and take a reading comprehension course. This would allow you to READ THE WHOLE article that KOAA has presented, twice or maybe three times if you have to, and UNDERSTAND what is being written. What fuels bigotry is being uneducated and uninformed.
From what I have read on Laura Rojas I'm sure she is a fantastic journalist and person. Cast my vote/opinion, for/on "I am glad KOAA has hired a beautiful, educated professional and I look forward to her delivering the news at 4 pm and 9 pm.” Oh by the way to all you bigots, I'm a gringo. (White man for you "by GOD we're in America, speak English!" people).
One last thing, to all you cowards that write comments/statements and hide behind the user name “anonymous”, well shame on you. I will have to laud Eli. Even though I don’t agree with his statements, he’s the only one with guts.

Thank you "Charles"for putting these "bigots" into place. Like Cecilia and the unknown anonymous person who was speaking nice things about the new news anchor we applaud you. She is here for one reason to present the news. Look at all the other markets. They have black people, asian people, spanish people, all races presenting the news and they speak English in their stories. And just because she speaks both languages, she should leave here??? This is Colorado Springs, CO and the reason I move here are the people, but with these "bigots" are not going to stop me from supporting KOAA and their decision to hire this wonderful woman. Why don't you three people leave Colorado Springs, you "asses!!!"

Anonymous, thank you for reading my comments. Yes I can be a little long winded and I have been known to tell a joke or two, but I'm not hiding behind anonymous! (Hmm Hmm "If the shoe fits...") Seems to me anonymous, you're probably ADD. But I'll leave that to your therapist.
And Amador I agree with you on most your points, but to say "Why don't you three people leave Colorado Springs..." is wrong. One thing Eli pointed out. It's our right to have opposed opinons, which makes our country so great. We need sadness to know happiness and we need intolerence to know harmony. I welcome different opinons and views. But what I don't welcome is someone judging a person by their race. Say for instance Laura Rojas was born in Amarillo, well that makes her a U.S. citizen to work, reside and live anywhere in America. She just happens to be Mexican-American with an empathis on AMERICAN.
And to the last anonymous, to call Amador ( who has the guts to list her name.) a wetback shows your lack of intolerence and "edumcation" It's easy to hide behind a keyboard and a plasma screen and toss racial slurs. Your actions shows of your insecurity...You ought to start a "Go up and hug someone of a different race" day, anonymous. Might do your self-esteem good.

From your favorite GRINGO! Oops I forgot, THIS IS AMERICA,USE ENGLISH BY GOD!!! Let me try again,

Even have a poll about this... so cast your vote.

Thank you Andy, for giving us the time to talk about the issue. I have been a tv fan for all these years, go throughout the stations around the country to check out their websites. I have seen Hispanic newscasters all over the country and the people praise their work not because of their nationality but their ability to bring us the news. These idiots brought this war because they think the news 5/30 news anchor was going to bring the news in Spanish. Look at the Denver tv market. None of the tv people on chs. 2, 4, 7, 9 and 31 there, their news people with Spanish surnames speak English. I see all the changes that tv brings and there will be more Hispanic people coming into the Colorado market for the people, the beauty and the lifestyles they want. So to put it in final words, let's welcome everybody with open arms, from all races, and let them bring us the news.
