Last word on KXRM

We've all been talking about how they did, but how did they think they did?

Just talked for a minute with news director and anchor Joe Cole.

"Our goal last night was just to make a seamless transition," he said.

He said a few things ran long, which is why the sports segment was cut waaaay back, but that was the biggest glitch. He mentioned a few problems with teleprompters and the audio glitches I noted.

"No huge snafus," Cole said. "We'll get a better feel for this hour."

Over the next few nights and weeks, Cole said he wants to pick up the pace of the newscast, smooth out the wrinkles. Still to come are a new graphics package and some other tweaks.

But, Cole said, he's pleased with the way things came together.

"From the show you witnessed (the first mock newscast last week) to last night was a small miracle," he said. "We'll get there."

So what about live shots then? Do they have live trucks?

The argument about "going live vs. not going live" was over more than a decade ago. YOU GO LIVE! Viewers would rather see the reporter at City Hall doing a story about City Government than have them inside the studio.

Going live implies they are actually out covering news and they were at the location when news actually happened. Viewers are smart enough to know that there's nothing going on at City Hall at 9 at night. But they like seeing the reporter out there.

Mr. Cole should read some Poynter Institute research along with some News Lab info on the topic. Then again, could he be lying to hide the fact that:

1 -- they have no live trucks.

2 -- his reporters will screw up their live shots because from what everyone can see already, they sound like they should still be in Grand Junction or another 200 market.

Congrats KXRM! You're the new door mat of the market...

KRDO, you're off the hook.

Outstanding program tonight! Good lighting, graphics, etc. Great team effort for your 2nd broadcast. If tonight's show is any indication, you will have plenty of loyal viewers.

Fox 21, goal accomplished! Pacing tonight was SUPER. Sports was good too. The anchors were relaxed and smooth. The new reporters had their stuff together and stories were interesting! I can't wait to see more from them. Also, I like the idea of not going live just to 'go live'. I like to see action in a live shot, not just someone standing around. I admire the fact that you are doing some new things in this market! More power to you and cheers on an even better second night!

Fox does have a live truck. Viewers will actually WATCH a live shot when it comes from Fox because they know it will be the real deal - not some pseudo story. I like their new hires. They seem hip & sharp.

Andy I don't know why you let these anonymous posters post. They just have no creditablity. Just a bunch of winers.

You know their was a time when KOAA sucked but now they don't. KRDO back in the 80's did not suck put thanks to Harry Hoth's bean counting daughter Patti KOAA was able to take advantage and went to the top while KRDO went to the bottom. Now News Press & Gazette runs KRDO and they will play to win.

You have to cut KXRM some slack. They are starting up their OWN newscast. If you expecting them to be on par with a KDVR, WSVN (Miami, FL), KDFW (Dallas-Fort Worth), WNYW (New York), KTTV (Los Angeles), WAGA (Atlanta) etc etc. You are mistaken.

First you had to get the people in place. I am sure Barrington Broadcasting will do what they can to make KXRM's newscast a winner

In response to KRDO, you're off the hook. Dude. You clearly work for KRDO. Of course Fox has a live truck, it's the same one they owned while with KKTV. Going live from City Hall does not confirm to a viewer that you were there on the scene earlier. With that thought process a stand-up would do the same thing. Our station does needless live shots for the sake of going live all the time.
It's boring TV but at least we know that's what's expected. Good for Fox taking their own stand on going live. At least when they go live viewers will pay attention.
When Fox was produced over here they were already beating KRDO in ratings.

I said SOME, anonymous posters and not all.

However you truly could be working in media, or you could be on the outside looking in.

However some many hide behind "anonymous" and really do not know who you are. I could do it too if I wanted to say something outragous or whatever.

I think the ones who ruin the blogs, message boards, etc are cowards who don't tell us who they are.
