Meister back on Wednesday

KRDO/Channel 13 chief meteorologist Matt Meister will be back on the air on Wednesday after serving a week-long suspension.

A live microphone caught Meister complaining about a technical snafu following a weather update during "According to Jim" July 26. Meister apologized for the incident during the station's 10 p.m. newscast that night, then was suspended the following day by KRDO general manager Neil Klockziem.

KRDO news director Dave Rose said the station received hundreds of phone calls and e-mails from viewers asking that Meister not be fired. Rose said the station has taken both technical and procedural steps to make sure a similar accident doesn't happen again.

"Certainly, we're all happy to have Matt back," Rose said. "We understand that what happened shouldn't have happened. We're confident that we have taken both people-oriented and technically-oriented steps to make sure that it won't happen again."

KRDO could still face fines for indecency from the Federal Communications Commission of up to $325,000 for the incident.

Has Matt been reading this blog? Matt you out there?

At 4:23 PM, July 31, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

So let me get this straight...

Matt is allowed to swear on the air and get praises by Dave Rose, while Jayne Smith only gets FOUR MONTHS (25% of which her supervisor, Matt Meister, was GONE) before she gets terminated, without her contract getting paid out???

What the hell? Did she shoot someone?

I think Mr.Rose has just set the FCC up for an even BIGGER payday! What's he and his lawyers thinking?? You can't "un-ring a bell", Mr Rose and you can't slight what happened. There has to be consequences! Hope you have your pen at the ready to write that BIG check!!

It sounds like Matt got a lawyer! A little negotiating, and poof he's back on the air!...but for how long? Well, I guess the ball is in the FCC court now.

Who says the FCC is even involved? That is only if someone filed a complaint. Did anyone? Do they have proof Matt even said what he is reported to have said? Do you think people in the Springs have the desire to file a complaint? Most people in this town don't even have the drive to file their nails let alone a complicated FCC form. Talk is cheap. I'm sure KRDO took that into account when they made their decision.

At 5:14 PM, July 31, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I filed a complaint. KRDO has admitted there was an "incident" as well.

The FCC is involved.

Hello??? Have you forgotten that one of the nation's largest Right Wing Christian groups (Focus On The Family)) resides in the Springs?? Don't you think they are foaming at the mouth to bring this to the FCC's attention? This is a big deal, and my guess is that they are going to put the screws to the FCC to make an example out of this...Especially since the laws just became stricter last month regarding offenses like this.

The earlier post said "talk is cheap" Wow! Talk about an oxy-moron?!? I doubt that Matt Meister's "talk" is gonna be so cheap!!

Jayne Smith lovers need to stop whining and get a life. She got fired it happens, it is under investigation now. DEAL WITH IT. It is not the first time this has happened to her, and it won't be the last. She is a big girl who isn't that good; she needs to come to grips with that and the same goes to her "fans".

At 7:07 PM, July 31, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why do people keep dragging Jayne into this mess. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Face it folks... Jayne didn't perform up to par and didn't try to improve in the eyes of KRDO management. She was canned. You people keep trying to form a conspiracy by syaing Matt was gone during her tenure on purpose and should have helped her. He and everyone else tried to. Also... it was said once before... Matt would have lost those days off he earned under "comp time" per NPG policy. He wasn't about to let them go to waste. Let me guess... there should be some rule that if a "newbie" has been working at K### for under X months.. then no one is allowed time off until she is trained and properly prepared. Whatever...

Effen A!! Shate, that is great!! Glad to hear Matt is coming back.

And for those that are stuck on Jayne, faggadaboutit!!!

Shw was greener than the fields in Dover. She stunk, was choppy, unsure of her presence and repeated the same word during her weather reports to the point of making me PUKE!!

GET OVER IT, no matter how much whining you do she ain't coming back but Matt is :-)

Who's your daddy!!!!

Similar incident happened back East somewhere. Sports guy was taping a morning broadcast and messed it up. Dropped the S-bomb and wanted to do it again.

Sure 'nuff, they ran that version the next morning instead of the proper one.

Sports guy got the axe, not the videotape op.

By allowing Matt to come back, KRDO just opened themselves up to a HUGE lawsuit potential.

The Matt Meister story made it into the Denver Post today. Now a real TV market sees little old us. And about the Focus on the Fruitcakes posts, have you ever talked with some of his followers. Very sad lot. Mindless and in need of constant guidance. The power is not in their minds. They are zombi types.

I guess I am not too familiar at how much pull the FCC has in this situation. Can they actually force KRDO to remove him from on-air duties and/or fire him? That seems like that is an internal amtter only. The fines will be bad enough on them.

At 8:31 PM, July 31, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Due to the fine cap being lifted to $325,000 per utterance, they're technically facing fines up to $975,000. Even if the FCC is feeling "kind" and fine them $50,000...then Matt would surely be terminated.

However, since KRDO did NOT handle the matter internally, I can certainly see the FCC going "balls out" in an effort to make an example that they do, in fact, mean business.

At 8:59 PM, July 31, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am just curious. If KRDO or NPG didn't fire him now... why would they fire him later? I don't see where him being employed or unemployed there would make a difference in fines. Like a previous poster said... can the FCC force them to fire him as part of any judgment?

...there it goes again...i hear the little girls talking again....all you jayne freaks and matt haters need to get a life...krdo IS NOT going to get sued, jaynes NOT coming back, and matt IS...the sky is falling, the sky is falling....get over it already...go pee up a rope or something...geeesh!

As many have stated before, this has NOTHING to do with Jayne. She got fired and that's it. All you "Jayne Haters" need to stop bringing her up.

What's this about? Anyone hear this? Its from the Gazette comments section today.

"Several months ago on the weather channel (Channel 9) while Rob Quirk and Lisa Lyden were bantering back and forth and dutifully checking their hair and make up in their pocket mirrors, Rob looked directly into the camera (assuming that his feed had been cut) and mouthed something far worse that what was said by Matt. Do you remember hearing anything about that? Nope. Didn’t think so."

Cable is not considered "broadcast."

At 9:25 AM, August 01, 2006, Anonymous Anonymous said...

The FCC can't force KRDO to fire Matt - but when someone costs their employer anywhere from $50k to near a MILLION bucks - they run the risk of getted axed.

In my company if an employee screws up and it costs the business more that $50 there's a risk of disciplinary action up to & including possible termination.

Cable is not considered "broadcast."

What is that supposed to mean? Even though you watched it on "cable" KRDO is still a "brodcast" station??

Keep your eyes on this site boys and girls and see if a Notice of Apparent Liability ever shows up with KRDO's callsign attatched to it. Then and only then will you be able to know if Matt will be shaking in his weather booties.

From that FCC site:

It is a violation of federal law to air obscene programming at any time. It is also a violation of federal law to broadcast indecent or profane programming during certain hours. (See definitions}. Congress has given the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) the responsibility for administratively enforcing the law that governs these types of broadcasts. The FCC has authority to issue civil monetary penalties, revoke a license or deny a renewal application. In addition, violators of the law, if convicted in a federal district court, are subject to criminal fines and/or imprisonment for not more than two years.

The FCC vigorously enforces this law where we find violations. In 2004 alone, the FCC took action in 12 cases, involving hundreds of thousands of complaints, assessing penalties and voluntary payments totaling approximately $8,000,000. The Commission has also toughened its enforcement penalties by proposing monetary penalties based on each indecent utterance in a broadcast, rather than proposing a single monetary penalty for the entire broadcast.

At the same time, however, the Commission is careful of First Amendment protections and the prohibitions on censorship and interference with broadcasters' freedom of speech. The FCC has denied complaints in cases in which we determined the broadcast was not indecent based on the overall context of the programming. Regardless of the outcome, the FCC strives to address every complaint within 9 months of its receipt.

One of the many items that must be kept in the "Local Public Inspection File" by KRDO (or any broadcast station) is Material Relating to an FCC Investigation or a Complaint.

From the FCC site:
Stations must keep material relating to any matter that is the subject of an FCC investigation or a complaint that the station has violated the Communications Act or our rules. The station must keep this material until we notify it that the material may be discarded. Since we are not involved in disputes regarding matters unrelated to the Communications Act or our rules, stations do not have to keep material relating to such matters in the public file.

I also think it is pretty tasteless to out someone on a blog like that. He didn't give you permission to say who he was.

How do we know it's even him? Anyone that knows his screenname could post here to get everyone stirred up.

"I agree Keyeser as I am one of the people who didn't have a choice in this matter! I am quite pissed at several of my co-workers who seem to have much less brain power than I had originally given them credit for..."

Oh, of course he LOVES his coworkers and wants god to bless them all. That's what he really meant to say.

That quote from him was when someone at his station posted myspace photos of him at a poker game and they showed up on newsblab. It doesn't have anything to do with the f-word thing.

"I also think it is pretty tasteless to out someone on a blog like that. He didn't give you permission to say who he was."

Didn't need his permission. He gave his identify away with his posts on Newsblab, so it's not a big secret!

This is NOT Newsblab. If people want to draw a correlation on their own to who ICAFUNNEL is... that is OK. However... it is NOT OK to out someone for the whole board to see.
