CC hockey headed to KYZX (103.9 FM) "The Eagle"

Colorado College on Wednesday announced a five-year deal with classic rock station KYZX (103.9 FM) "The Eagle" to carry the school's hockey games beginning this fall.

School officials said the deal with the FM music station would allow more people to hear the games than the old partnership with KRDO (1240 AM).

"The coverage is outstanding," said CC hockey coach Scott Owens.

Owens said fans often complained to him that they would lose the signal in the middle of games as they drove over Monument Hill. KYZX can be heard as far north as Parker.

The Eagle will continue to air CC hockey coach Scott Owens' coach's show at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and also add a Friday morning update with Owens at 7:30 a.m.

"I can't even keep it in my skin and keep the grin off my face," said Lou Mellini, general manager for KYZX.

Although hockey games on a music station might seem like an odd pairing, Mellini said FM rock stations in other parts of the country have been successful carrying NFL games. He said the huge local audience for CC hockey would give KYZX a similar opportunity for success.

KRDO carried CC hockey for 16 seasons. The school is also looking for a new play-by-play voice to replace KRDO's Jeff Thomas and is still in negotiations with several cable networks for television coverage of games.

Hey Andy,
Was the new KRDO FM station hoping to get the game coverage and were they even being considered?

KRDO was still negotiating after they announced the switch to news-talk (the format will be simulcast on KRDO AM and FM). My suspicion is that there were just too many changes happening at KRDO to overcome KYZX, which clearly wanted this in a big way.

Andy,

KYZX getting CC Hockey should only help the station boost its numbers. They have been behind hertiage KKFM for quite some time. KKFM marketing themselves as a "Real Classic Rock" station paid off. However KYZX has opened themselves to the more Harder Rock artists and not just leaned on the Progressive bands like Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, Yes, Kansas etc.

Also getting Hockey should only help KYZX in showing they are the Classic Rock that believes in localism. KKFM in recent years added syndicated programing for the Morning and Evening dayparts.

Those respectful are Bob & Tom which KKFM picked up after Clear Channel flipped KMOM/Mother to their current KIBT/96.1 The Beat incarnation, and Alice Cooper which has proven to be a ratings getter on the stations that picked up the Classic Shock Rocker.

Hey, You have an excellent progam today. I don't listen to your station but, was "surfing" around this a.m. and left it on 103.9 and realized the excellence of the song programming. Whoever the programmer is--------give him/her a compliment for me.
Kind regards,
