Lazerman and Coffey leaving, CK heads to country

Three of the loudest voices in local radio will be silenced today.

After eight years together and 26 No. 1 finishes in the Arbitrons, CK and Lazerman are breaking up the Magic morning show at KKMG (98.9 FM). CK heads down the hall to sister station KATC (95.1 FM) "Cat Country," while Lazer is hanging up his mic and trying a new careeer in pharmaceutical sales in Washington, D.C. The third half of the trio, Romi, will carry on the show.

CK's been at Magic for more than 10 years, Lazer for a little more than 8. For a long, long time, they were far and away the top morning show in town. The sledding's gotten a little rockier since KIBT (96.1 FM) "The Beat" signed on a year and a half ago, but they've still managed some solid numbers.

Station owner Citadel didn't announce a thing beforehand, but the company is giving the boys an hour-long retrospective at 9 a.m. Friday. Lazer says he'll miss "White Trash Wednesdays" the most. Bless the boy.

Meanwhile, down at KVUU (99.9 FM) "My 99.9 FM," Craig Coffey is leaving his eponymous "Coffey in the Morning" Show after seven solid years. He's headed to Seattle, where we hear it rains less. Co-hosts Coba and Darren McKee will audition some replacements over the next month. In the meantime, we ponder the question: Should it be "Coffee in the Morning" from now on?

KVUU owner Clear Channel was keeping this one under wraps, too. You think they'd want people to tune in, but I guess deejays are supposed to vanish quietly into the night.

There should be a story with some quotes and a few more details in Friday's Metro section. I'll fill you in on the replacements as I get word.

Coba and McKee are staying? I was hoping KVUU would use Coffey's departure as an opportunity to dump those two.

McKee is hopelessly clueless when it comes to his personal life. Both he and Coba report inaccurate news on an almost weekly basis.

Come on KVUU, you can do better!

As for KATC: are they going to keep their music heavy format or turn into every other station in town: lame morning show with a touch of music?

People really still listen to FM radio?!? :)
Not one FM station in town played music even remotely close to what I like, so I switched to XM radio a year and a half ago and haven't listened to an FM station for one second since!
I listen to the radio for music, not for lame DJ banter.

CK in the morning at Cat Country? No wonder Craig & Sam from KKCS told Citadel "No Way!" & hit the road!

For those of us who don't want to mess with our ipods on our short commute - I do find it interesting that these weren't really "announced" on air with a bit of a "goodbye" period for fans...

Lots of motion in COS Radio lately...

I do not listen to music deejays for news. I'm a news junkie and get my news from other sources. While listening to those two imbeciles as KVUU 'report' the news, I noticed they were often inaccurate. There are people who get their news from DJ's and don't know that their getting incorrect info.

As for XM: Not everyone has it or can afford it. I don't own an ipod, either and my car doesn't have a CD player. I channel surf during my hour commute and would really like a quality DJ on the air.

Are there more changes coming? Please tell me KVOR is just going to put itself out of its misery.

Sooner or later KATC needs to put some personality into the station. Not every station can be like JackFM. It still could be a music driven show which some talk and not like it was when CK was doing morning on KKMG. Before KIBT Magic's morning show did fine and they talked more than the other shows in the this market excluding the syndicated Bob & Tom.

If you think Coba and McKee is lame, then you might want to ask KVUU to pick Kidd Kraddick out of Dallas. Otherwise you might want to respect the fact that KVUU wants to do a live and local show and be live and local in all the key dayparts.

I am looking forward on how News Press & Gazette is going to set up the new KRDO-AM-FM, but unless they have something to offer outside their planned local news shows, KVOR will still be the CS News/Talk station. Personally not having talk shows that engage the listen is not going to help your station win, and KVOR does carry the top four Talkers in country.

Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, and Michael Savage. They are all heard on KVOR.

Well KRDO Radio is smart in bringing in Dr. Laura to their lineup. She might have taken a few knocks off the ladder with the rise of Sean Hannity, but she is still competitive nationally and still does well on flagship station KFI-AM in LA.

Lets see who they bring on as well. Would love it if they broughts some of these personalities on.

Neal Boortz (Still can use my computer if they don't)

Clark Howard

Jerry Doyle

Rusty Humphries

I can see KRDO-AM-FM picking up Dave Ramsey with Salem dropping the show alltogether and KZNT is a Salem owned station that carried Ramsey's show.

Not a big Dr. Laura fan but KRDO Radio is going in the right direction in making their station a winner. Keep it up you guys.

I remember they used to have those -- I mean like back in the '70s. I remember seeing car decks with built-in 2-inch TV's, too.
