Today seeps into tomorrow

NBC just announced that the "Today" show will expand to four hours in September. That, my friends, is a lot of morning television news.

Not to fear, however: Matt Lauer and Meredith Vieira will only go three-deep -- Ann Curry will anchor Hour Four with Natalie Morales and Hoda Kotb.

At the rate we're going, it's only a matter of time until the network morning shows last clear up til noon, then we'll have local news til 6, network news til 7, an hour or so of primetime and then another six or eight or 12 hours of news.

'Today' is nearly unwatchable after the first 1/2 hour (20 minutes if you don't count the local news/weather rehash) and continues to go downhill as the next 2.5 hours progress. I can not imagine what trite "news" they will feature in the 4th hour.

Re: "what trite 'news' they will feature in the 4th hour" - they don't even pretend that it's news beyond the first 20 minutes.

Rather, it's unabashedly lifestyle programming. Your cue: when they move to a secondary set or when they hit the street.

The "Today Show" is an NBC News product, but no one would suggest (or believe) that it's 3 - and soon to be 4 - hours of "news."

I look at it this way: if they don't have news programs, you'll have to suffer through reruns of seinfeld or friends...or WORSE, hour long commercials trying to sell you something...The news is ok, would be ok to simulcast msnbc or cnn instead of the fluff and no brianer tv like today or this morning programs...I think the tv networks have run out of ideas for game shows...
